CBS: Big East contract could be as low as $40 million per year

CBSSports.com reported last week that a Big East contract could be worth as little as $60 million per year. Industry sources are saying now that number could be as low as $40 million per year. If that's the case, that's an average of $1.85 million per year per school. Seventy percent of that number would be football revenue, or $1.29 million. The Mountain West currently pays between $2 million-$3 million per year to its schools, according to sources.

That's news to me. But it looks like the Dr. Morrow's creation of a conference Boise will now be joining is actually less valuable than the MWC. More importantly, it is less cohesive and stable. I believe that when the MWC negotiates a new deal in a few years they will be able to get good money because of the league's greater cohesiveness and the vacuum the BE's demise will create in the market for low-grade football content [Friday nights, 11am Saturday on ESPNU, etc.] I've said all along that Houston and SMU should have joined the MWC instead of Boise and SDSU moving with them into the BE. I'll bet that's what ends up happening, and I'll bet that it will be better for all of them in the end.

The author is playing with numbers. The MWC contract is worth $20 million per year. The only way to get to that number ($3 mil per school) is by subtracting the members leaving at the end of the year and not adding in the new schools that have already accepted invitations. Also, the only way the Big East contract drops that low is if the basketball schools leave which would leave $40 million divided by 13-14 schools.

The author is including total conference revenue for the MWC, which includes basketball tourney in Vegas and NCAA credits.

For football only Boise, 1.4 mill minus travel costs, minus the 400k subsidy to the Big West for travel means that Boise would lose money bigtime in the BE.

Big East should seriously consider an antitrust suit against ESPN. They would have all the money they need if they win. The ACC almost basically told the media that that ESPN had told the to raid the Big East. It seems the Big East was quick to sue TCU and WV but won't sue ESPN and ACC? An antitrust case would really make conference realignment interesting.

A source told ESPN on Wednesday that Temple, as a football-only member, has voting rights but can't vote on dissolution of the league. With Temple unable to vote, that gives the seven basketball schools enough votes to dissolve the league.

Sources said there are multiple legal entanglements that make the voting situation "complex."

That 2-3 million number includes all distributions. The tv part is currently about 800k in the MWC.
