Carlton blog on Big 12

http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/college-sports/headlines/20130129-carlton-big-12-officials-feel-prepared-after-meeting.ece

mostly nothing new, but a coupld of tidbits at the bottom.

- Either the Alamo or Meineke could move into the #2 Big 12 destination. Doesn't sound like we'll slip in a Florida Bowl ahead of them. One of the downsides of the Cotton going BCS, I guess.

- If there is an ACC alliance, each team will play an ACC team each year. So our nonconference schedule would pretty much be:

1. ACC game
2. SMU
3. FCS

Probably thinking too far ahead, but I would guess the league for most teams would schedule the ACC game at home for the 4 conference home game teams, and away for the 5 conference home game teams (making an essentially even 5 and 5 schedule). However we already have SMU scheduled as home for our 4 conference game years, meaning we'd go 8 home games one year and 5 the next. Of course with 14 ACC teams, there's a lot of flexibility so they'd probably be able to give us a home game the years we want.

The Big 10/Pac 12 discussed a similar scheduling partnership...and then it fell through, though I think that was because the Pac didn't like the Big 10 have fewer conference games.

ACC has 8 conference games...Big 12 has 9.

There are several reasons why a "scheduling alliance" with the ACC might be a really bad idea for the B12, and this is one of them. They don't listen to me, so I have to trust the conference leadership not to agree to something that hurts the conference's business model, or puts us at a competitive disadvantage for playoff slots or top-drawer bowl games.

Duh- I was wrong. It would be 7 home games one year and 6 home games the next either way. It would just be both SMU and the ACC on the road or home, but we'd have no less than 6 home games either way.

Pac teams didn't want to have only two free OOC games to schedule. Big 12 shares that problem.

Kind of my thought. No way that happens and SMU is odd man out. That series is tired as hell anyway. Maybe every fourth year or so would get some life in it.
Instead of playing SMU every year, I suggest we play some other Texas schools not in our conference. Rotate, SMU with Houston, Rice, UTSA, Texas State, and maybe even A&M.

I would like this arrangement AFTER we expand again and go to playing 8 conference games. I want the flexibility to have a random marquee matchup any given year (like next year's LSU game) without giving up our FCS game.

[I know LSU was scheduled many years out, but it is random in the sense that it isn't part of an over-arching scheduling arrangement]
