In defense of Dykes, the landscape has changed considerably since he took the job. It used to be that he could sell and small school, playing time, and metro-area that you can play before your friends and family. Now every Tom, Dick, and Harry will take cold hard cash to even play in a place like Lubbock. We used to have an advantage as a destination not named Austin or Norman. That isn't the case anymore. It is a lot harder to pay for the players that we need to make another run at the championship. Is he the right man for the job? I'm not sure, but I am not sure who is, because it seems like it's less about Xs and Os any more and more about stepping up to the plate and writing a check. I'm sure even Dave Aranda's job would be safe if Baylor was spending $10-$15 million more per year.
It’s prevalent throughout college football, the next guy is always the one that is going to turn it around. And then halfway through the first season, the fan base wants another change.
Coaching changes are almost more about being able to sell hope than actual results.

You’re right and that was one of the most key factors that made me unwilling to give up on GP and disagree with the decision to fire him. We are on the carousel now like almost everybody else had been for the previous 20 years. GP wasn’t perfect and he was stubborn…but he was one of us and the big donors supported him. Now we are in the flavor of the month club. No going back now but hope like hell it doesn’t take another 20 years to get a shot at being great again. Not sure we aren’t already dead with the amount of changes taking place in the sport.
If someone wants to argue that Dykes isn’t the long term answer that’s perfectly reasonable, but I can’t imagine thinking GP didn’t need to go in 2021. The team had totally quit on him and he had shown time and time again that he was too stubborn to change anything.

I can see the position for sure. But I believe the greatest factor in his stubbornness regarding change was the messenger suggesting change. ADJD addressed GP in a way that was condescending and intended to garner a response that would create an opportunity for him to replace GP. JD had problems of his own making that caused plenty to have no respect for him. And the most tenured and powerful head coaches were all a threat to his BS.

Unless you and a bunch of other Frogs write several huge checks, then nothing is going to happen.
And who are you going to give the checks to?
I love this narrative, but who is going to fire Sonny? The AD who stupidly gave him a huge extension? The Chancellor who hired the AD and approved it? The Board of Trustees who just hired the Chancellor? This our bed. We made it. We are going to sleepwalk with Sonny until he is gone in 4 years.
