Keep in mind we've been highly competitive on the football field for about 10 years. Yes, we have 2 NCs back in the day, and had a few decent years here and there... but look at the programs that are cleaning up. These are programs that have won/are winning NCs, or have head coaches that have done so at other programs (South Car. is specifically on my mind in regards that that). Coach P is still building. Lots of people thinking that once we won the Rose Bowl, we've arrived. That was my favorite sports moment ever, but we've still got work to do, there is still more to be done to build the brand. I think that a solid 10-win season and a conference championship in '13 or '14 will go a long way for us, bc I feel that the "TCU can't compete in the Big XII" attitude is still highly prevalent out on the recruiting trail.

Also keep in mind that Coach P and staff don't pay much mind to the recruiting rankings, and neither should you.

I don't think our recruiting classes are bad per se. I think we evaluate talent differently. We do well because the staff gets the type player needed to fit into our systems. Those players may not have the recruiting accolades as some of their counterparts, but they do what we need. A 4-star recruit in the wrong system becomes a 2-star recruit in production. Conversely, a 2-star recruit in the right system can shine. So, although our classes may not have the recognition based on stars, we get quality athletes. It's only gonna get better.

Also consider that "recruiting rankings" take into account how many players you get signed and not average quality across the board.

i think thats how it works isn't it?

I do think it would be completely naive to just ignore the rankings altogether. Those may not be a sure-fire way to know how a kid will perform in college, but they are usually a decent indication of at least the POTENTIAL of a kid. Yes, Jerry Hughes was a 2* RB and became a 1st round draft pick at DE, which was a great job done by the coaching staff. But look at this kid who we grabbed that was highly recruited and hyped out of high school, and what he did on the field this year.

If you ask anyone around the program (old players, equip staff, etc), they'll most likely tell you that Ladarius Brown and Devonte Fields are the two best players on the team. Both highly sought after 4* recruits.

This is a big part of it, yes. Thus why Baylor's class is much higher ranked than ours, despite us having more "stars per player" on average.. 3 to 2.8. They have 20 commits to our 15.

Yeah, GP gets the guys that fit his system, but he also misses on a lot of players he offers that are highly rated by the recruiting sites. It is a work in progress, and I think that we should all expect at least a few more years before the classes start getting awesome...

Also, as of now TCU is not a proven team in the Big 12. I think we need to string together some more 10-win seasons before we feel entitled to all the top recruits.

That is if, and only if, we win games on the field. If we go 7-5ish every year, we'll be no better off than anyone else in the middle of the Big XII pack.

Haha tis all good.. just making sure that was clear... because I think there is a group in the purple universe that think just bc we joined the Big XII, we'll start nabbing top talent. Just not the truth.

A lot of these guys will have interest if not offers from a whole bunch of programs. Every program will "miss" except 1.

So if Patterson is offering the same recruits as everyone else is, it's no shock that most say "no". Don't care how good the product is, no sales person can close on every prospect.

I'm glad you aren't our program's closer.

Someone should explain the ascendancy of Vandy and Stanford (6-7 years ago) in recruting which had less to work with than us in terms of recent football success. You would think we would at least be getting a 1/2 dozen 4 stars by now. The good news is we are at least mostly done with 2 stars.

The Stanford one probably came from the mixture of winning big games and the Heisman hype that Luck stirred up. When a kid sees another kid from a school in the mix for that award, it's fairly attractive to them, and stands to reason that it plays into their decision.

Tell that to Kevin Sumlin. He's fielding two teams next year.
