Boykin Interview with Seals

Miami has more talent, but I don't think the margin is that great. Indiana has the experience edge, and they have Mendoza, who I think is extra special.

It will be interesting to see if IU can maintain any semblance of this kind of success. I think everyone is kind of studying what they are doing and the result is going to be blue bloods relying less on underclassmen in the future. That's the one area you look at and say, that is something they are doing differently with an average starter age of 22.5.

We'll see.
Eventually, these players are going to figure out that coming out of high school, it's best to sign with a team that will give them almost immediate playing time. Their chances to move to a Big Brand U team will come later when they have 25+ starts under their belt. It won't do them any good to go to Bama and sit for two or three years, anymore.

In a way, this is how GP built his teams and that's why they peaked every 3-4 years and then we'd have a down-cycle. It wasn't until he had a starting lineup of experienced players that we hit our stride, especially on defense. But when we did, it was magical.

You often say he was mediocre, or lost his touch, or whatever over the last 5-6 years. I think he just missed on one cycle (20/21), and our personnel was lacking for a lot of different reasons discussed ad nauseum on here. That being said, I don't think he would have adjusted well to this new world order in college football.

I do not have any inside information, but I can sum up why Hoover left:

1 - he got a raise

2 - he gets a chance to work with Cignetti, the new genius of college football.

All of the other stuff is fluff. Simple question for every person questioning Hoover's decision: would you rather work with Sonny Dykes or Curt Cignetti? Easy answer, right?
I would have been fine with him going to play for Cignetti since he had already graduated. With that being said, Hoover opting out of the bowl game showed what his character is all about right now.

The difference obviously being in this era, you develop young talent and a lot of the good ones will end up playing for other teams. That's largely what Indiana is doing, they aren't winning with guys they recruited and developed, they smartly went the route of bringing in experienced, older kids to play over young players that are still developing.

People seem to get worked up that I think GP had lost his touch, but I stand by it. The record shows it. Those teams from '16-'21 (and I get 2017 was a good year so no need for anyone to remind me of that) had enough talent to win more games than they were winning, especially those in the last couple years. The whole thing had devolved into a mess, just a bunch of coaches yelling at each other looking miserable on the sidelines and players who often looked like they didn't care all that much.

And right now it looks like it worked out pretty well for us with Seals being able to bring home the win. You're right in a way, Seals had the character to want to win. We have to go forward from here though.

I have a while lot more respect for the players that played in the bowl game and not opting out even though they will get drafted and potentially have a great NFL future. Hoover obviously does not value TCU very much when compared to them.

If Briles coached the bowl game Hoover would have played IMO. if Briles stayed at TCU then I think Hoover stays too. Not sure why his loyalty seemed to lean more toward Briles than his team, school, fanbase but seems to be the case. He had a C on his jersey but in the end he was no captain or leader.

I think Briles protected him. Briles was a buffer between Hoover and Dikes. Without Briles in his corner, Hoover was on his own and he didn’t like that. Briles kept a lot of heat off of Hoover…

Briles being ok with a turnover machine would be very on brand.
