Eventually, these players are going to figure out that coming out of high school, it's best to sign with a team that will give them almost immediate playing time. Their chances to move to a Big Brand U team will come later when they have 25+ starts under their belt. It won't do them any good to go to Bama and sit for two or three years, anymore.Miami has more talent, but I don't think the margin is that great. Indiana has the experience edge, and they have Mendoza, who I think is extra special.
It will be interesting to see if IU can maintain any semblance of this kind of success. I think everyone is kind of studying what they are doing and the result is going to be blue bloods relying less on underclassmen in the future. That's the one area you look at and say, that is something they are doing differently with an average starter age of 22.5.
We'll see.
In a way, this is how GP built his teams and that's why they peaked every 3-4 years and then we'd have a down-cycle. It wasn't until he had a starting lineup of experienced players that we hit our stride, especially on defense. But when we did, it was magical.
You often say he was mediocre, or lost his touch, or whatever over the last 5-6 years. I think he just missed on one cycle (20/21), and our personnel was lacking for a lot of different reasons discussed ad nauseum on here. That being said, I don't think he would have adjusted well to this new world order in college football.
