Bowl TV ratings

No wonder the Orange bowl was jumping off the stadium when they found out they had to host Norther Illinois. What a joke.

If there were a playoff, however, those numbers would be in the 30s by the time you reach the final four. Think of it, Louisville on a miracle run playing a dominant Alabama team and a seemingly unstoppable Johnny Manziel and the Aggies take on a high-flying Oregon squad. Just thinking about it gets me excited for college football, then depressing. Alas, CFB is stuck with the BCS and terrible ratings.

I interpret that a little differently- they had the biggest % increase of all the BCS bowls, and were in line with Fla-Louisville as well as previous Orange Bowls, including 2009-2010 which was on network. It was no ratings bonanza, but no disaster, either.

I think people have preconceived notions about who is a bigger TV draw, but the more I look at TV bowl ratings, the more the time of day (late do worse), network (network>ESPN>ESPN2 and ESPNU), day of week (afternoon games during psuedo work days like Dec 31 do worse), competing sports and events (like NYE) make a difference in ratings almost more than who is playing. You can almost predict some of these, like the Music City and Liberty struggling on the 31st, the Fight Hunger and Heart of Dalls struggling on ESPN2/U, etc.

I'm actually kinda surprised the late night starts of the Tech and TCU games didn't depress ratings more.

Orange bowl drew a 6.1. Thats a joke? Do you know how many cable networks, ESPN included, would kill somebody to get a 6.1? To put that number in to perspective, the highest ranked regularly scheduled program on cable gets between a 2.7 and 3.5 on any given week.

If this was a playoff year, the Aggies wouldnt have made the cut at 9.

I advocate for 12 teams with byes to top 4 seeds. 16 Is too much.
When ever someone posts this suggestion, I have to ask. Why is it so much better to give 4 biasly ranked teams a bye when it would seem so much more fair to give 4 more teams a chance to win? Either way still takes 3 weeks of games so 12 teams is not faster or easier.

I would say the more likely scenario is a 6 team playoff with #1 and #2 getting byes...

You guys advocating a Bye for certain teams in a playoff: Why?

Take the 8 conference champs and get it on.

So that finishing #1 or #2 means at least something. College football has always been about trying to finish #1 at the end of the regular season until recently when it became about finishing #1 or #2. Do you want Alabama sitting players at the end of the season because they know they will be in the top 8 anyway, so might as well be healthy going in?

Interesting thought as to why, but I still feel it is far more fair to allow 2 more teams in. Glad someone can give a reason for byes, most avoid the question. But in response: Would you rather a worthy Big 12 runner up sitting at #7 being left out on the fear that a #2 Alabama player might not give his all vs Auburn (or Tenn-Chattanooga)?

Also to add before it comes up: Yes, there will always be someone left out at #9 or #17, but at least they wont be left out so a team can get a week off.

Edit: Also how many times in the past 40 years has someone claimed their ranking title from before the bowl games? Does any team really play for their "regular season" ranking or just final ranking?
