These fools totally screwed up when they turned down ESPN. The current offer is a fraction of what they were offered. The bb schools own this entire problem.

Somebody smarter than I (and there's lots of those) needs to explain to me why the Big East should even exist as a football conference after next season.

With the plus-1 playoff beginning in 2014-2015 and the end of the whole "BCS Bowl" designation (and thus, the end of the "AQ Conference" designation), what's the point of the Big East even being there? The Mountain West is a better football conference.

That part is, but not this part:

However, as the Providence Journal-Bulletin reported last month, the seven apparently have the power to vote as a bloc and dissolve the league, which would position them to pursue the MSG tournament, avoid exit fees and collect the money due them from the league treasury.

that's not so clear. Nobody's quite sure if Temple - currently football only - has the authority to vote on membership issues. if they do, then the Catholic schools don't have the votes to dissolve.

That's what he says. Others aren't so sure. But like I said, if they do, then dissolution aint happening.

At issue is whether the Big East basketball-only schools have the power to dissolve the league, and retain all the assets and brand name. A source with knowledge of the situation said that until July 1, the seven have the majority votes and the necessary three-fourths to have controlling power. There are only three remaining football members -- Connecticut, Cincinnati and South Florida.
But a number of sources couldn't confirm whether Temple, which is a football-only member this season, has a controlling vote. One Big East source said Temple has a vote on football issues but wasn't sure whether the Owls could use that vote for membership. If the Owls could, Temple likely would be the fourth vote preventing any dissolving of the league.

If the basketball schools vote now to disolve the league, they are as bad as UT, A&M, Tech and Baylor when they destroyed the SWC. Possibly worse since they could have avoided the problem a long time ago and left a viable conference for the football schools at the time.

the two situations aren't remotely the same. How could they have prevented all the defections? What's the difference between splitting now and splitting 5 or 10 years ago? 5 or 10 years ago you had a strong league. If they had left then you still would have had a significantly devalued conference because the Big East was and is a basketball-first conference. And the schools that did defect still would have done so. The TV deal bears that out. What you have here is 7 schools considering an action more akin to what TCU did to the WAC, CUSA and MWC - leaving a conference that does not resemble the one they joined. Do you hold TCU just as responsible for what happened to those conferences.
