Big 12 would lose BCS Autobid if they lose 8 members

The big question of whether a raided Big-12 could revive itself by trying to lure some MWC teams to join them by using their AQ status as bait has been answered by the New York Times. Pay particular attention to the last paragraph of this article...

QUOTE
If the Pac-10 swiped six teams from the Big 12 and Missouri or Nebraska went to the Big Ten, the Big 12 would become defunct. Under N.C.A.A. guidelines, a conference needs at least six universities that have played together for five years. The Big 12 would lose its Bowl Championship Series bid and automatic bid to the N.C.A.A. basketball tournament. That could leave colleges like Kansas and Kansas State to be snapped up by the Big East, which could be its best bet to continue using the lure of a B.C.S. bid for football recruits.

And they would also lose all the basketball money earned by the departing schools, according to this NCAA rule...

QUOTE
f. If fifty (50) percent or more of the member institutions in a given conference leave the conference simultaneously and the remaining conference membership falls below six member institutions, the conference shall be considered disbanded and each member institution shall retain the units it earned in the basketball fund as if the conference had in fact disbanded (for the purposes of the basketball fund distribution).
