Big 12 Media Days (Day 1)

  • The great thing about Iowa State football is that we haven't changed. We still prioritize recruiting High School student-athletes.
  • The season opener in Ireland with K-State is a unique challenge. It's an honor and a unique opportunity. We've been talking with our players about this game since January. The post-travel is what's going to be hard. It's challenging.
  • Lost their top 2 receivers last year. We have to have great people around your QB. Coach feels they have the best tight ends in the country. Daniel Jackson is back this year which is huge.
  • From top to bottom, this conference is great. We have to stay healthy and pretty tough to get back the Big 12 championship. Are the 18-22-year-olds mentally tough enough?

Next up: K-State's Chris Klieman

He brought 5 players today:
QB, Avery Johnson
OL, Taylor Poitier
DE, Cody Stufflebean
LB, Des Purnell
S, VJ Payne

Coach Klieman on the Ireland game and more:
  • We had reservations about taking a home game out of our community and economy, but it's such a great opportunity for the kids. 18 months ago, it sounded great, but now it's coming up on us fast—the logistics.
  • Talked about protected rivalries—unintended consequences of having so many teams in the conference.
  • We did not do a pre-season coaches poll bc it hurts teams. It hurt BYU and Arizona State. The key is which team can block out all the outside noise.
  • Offensive line: 4 transfers this year. We needed some older guys. John Pastore is back....over 300lbs.
  • Avery Johnson has put on 17 lbs of lean muscle mass. His body has matured. He's faster. He's ready to take on more things at the line of scrimmage. He has Matt Wells as his QB, which is key. Matt will call the plays.
  • Perspective on the CFP expansion: a perfect landing spot is 16 teams. Eliminate the byes. The wear and tear on the athletes is real. Knocking down the roster size was not good to do.
  • We have running backs. Dillion Edwards!

4 Cincy Players:
QB, Brendan Sorsby (Texas boy)
TE, Joe Royer
OL, starting center - Gavin Gerhardt
DL, Dontay Corleone

all 4 guys could have left but decided to stick with us.

Satterfield says:

  • We have added speed, especially in the wide receiver program
  • We want to have good balance on the offense. We have to distribute the football. Allowing all the guys to be a part of the offense.
  • Went from visor to full hat during practice was an intentional choice. (no more elaboration on that)
  • We have to hit on all cylinders starting the season off against Nebraska (Matt Ruhl) at Arrowhead Stadium.
  • Cyncy's 1st season with an indoor field and building. They just moved into it. It's bright, airy, and big. The building is tremendous. Helps recruiting.
  • Had to replace 3 offensive linemen. Had to go out and get some experience coming in. The o-line is in good shape. They have good depth.
  • 3.44 GPA, zero misses in study hall. No issues off the field. They are disciplined.
  • unique blend of returners and transfers. Had to upgrade on wide receivers (more speed). not giving up the big plays.

Scott Frost is glad to be back at UCF and in the Big 12
  • UCF is unique. It's so young compared to other Power 4 schools.
  • Changes he made: 48 scholarship players when he arrived. 70 new football players to the program. They have a lot of work to do to get to know each other.
  • All experience gives you wisdom and perspective. Scott says, You can't do anything alone. He and his wife are so happy in Orlando.
  • UCF has grown and has so much potential.
  • being in the Big 12 allows them to attract better players.

Dave (like many coaches) started off by addressing the tragedy in the Hill Country. He said he and his wife have just been struggling with it.

I really like this coach. It pains me to say this.

Dave Aranda:

  • They start the season with Auburn!
  • our conference has good quarterbacks and tough defenses. Tough road environments
  • Every Saturday is a toss-up
  • He talked about Alex Foster (player who was shot dead in his hometown). He said Alex was a gentle giant. It wasn't fair the way he went. We have some anger. We took the team to the funeral. There is still a lot of work to be done. We are learning.
  • We are in an attack mode. "Go take it" mode.
  • Aggressiveness and ability to communicate set our offense apart.
  • There's an effort to recruit High School players. Want to take planes to games instead of buses. Develop players and have relationships with the parents.
  • Running Backs: Bryson brings a downhill quality. Great vision.
    • Dawson is patient and slippery. It's hard to get a direct hit on him. He has put on weight.
