Big 12 fines Oklahoma State for 'inappropriate chants' during win over BYU

BYU coach Kevin Young also spoke out against the apparent anti-Mormon chants

By Will Backus & Carter Bahns

The Big 12 levied a $50,000 fine against Oklahoma State after it conducted an investigation into "inappropriate chants" that allegedly occurred during Oklahoma State's 99-92 win against No. 16 BYU Wednesday night. Broadcast audio caught Oklahoma State fans chanting either "f--- the Mormons" or "Ref's a Mormon" after a foul was assessed against the Cowboys late in the second half. Oklahoma State will not appeal the fine.

Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark issued a statement after the game and said both schools had been notified of the investigation and that the conference has "no tolerance" for the purported behavior.

Kansas shocks No. 1 Arizona: Without star Darryn Peterson, Jayhawks hand first loss of season to Wildcats

The Jayhawks defeated the No. 1 team in the AP poll at Allen Fieldhouse for the first time in school history

By Cameron Salerno

Kansas delivered a shocking 82-78 upset victory over No. 1 Arizona on Monday at Phog Allen Fieldhouse as the Wildcats lost for the first time this season. Melvin Council Jr. and Flory Bidunga combined to score 32 of Kansas' 39 second-half points after it was announced just prior to tipoff that star guard and NBA Draft prospect Darryn Peterson would not play due to flu-like symptoms.

Freshman Bryson Tiller had another strong outing in a big moment and finished with 18 points and eight rebounds for the No. 9 Jayhawks. Tiller had his best game of the season last month against BYU when he scored 21 points, while Peterson missed a majority of the second half due to cramping.

Kansas (19-5, 9-2 Big 12) has won eight consecutive games since losing to West Virginia on the road last month. The Jayhawks are just a game behind Arizona for first place in the Big 12 standings and improved to 57-0 when playing at home on Mondays under coach Bill Self.

What do you lawyers think? Is K-State justified in a for-cause firing for activing bringing "public disrepute, embarrassment, ridicule" to the university for Jerome Tang saying, "These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform.... There will be very few of them in it next year. I'm embarrassed for the university, I'm embarrassed for our fans, our student section. It is ridiculous ... I have no answer. No words."

Or does Tang win a suit against K-State for the 18.67M outstanding on his contract?

(No credit given for saying Tang's coaching was the embarrassment.)

I am not a lawyer, but I don’t think coach Tang harmed the university. He may have harmed himself in not sounding very bright in his post-game comments. If you are going to extend harm to the university for that, then how about a for-cause firing of the AD for hiring Tang.

Frogs are back in the “Last Four In.”

TCU ENDURES: Horned Frogs prevail in OT in Stillwater to move up and into the field, bumping San Diego State.

West Virginia has climbed into the “Next Four Out” with their road win at UCF.

Absolutely amazing how far Tang has fallen in 4 years. I am sure he’ll go back to Baylor because they sure haven’t been the same since he left either. I don’t think they’ve beat us at home since he left BU.

I suspect KState will pay near full sticker price for that firing. If not above sticker if Tangs lawyers want to add on any emotional distress claims to their suit.

seemed like a dumb decision for the school and I’m guessing ties into a larger concern for their athletic department stability. They are reeling up there in the little apple, and this move feels like it’s continuing that

Kevin Ollie was fired "for cause" when he got UConn on probation for NCAA violations. He later sued and got at least some of his buyout.

If NCAA violations aren't considered cause enough to void his buyout, I don't think Kansas State is going to have much chance.

Of course Tang was fired with cause. Cause he was 1-11 in the Conference'

Welcome to the NIL era. When you have players who are there because the school was the highest bidder why should one expect them to care about the University.

It's hard to guess whether or not K-State has "cause" (including the "cause" described in the "helcap" post above) without knowing precisely what Tang's employment contract says, and maybe what state of Kansas law says if it is different from the Texas law we love and respect.
