In reference to a play in the Kansas and KState game …

Back in the day if the offense picked up a first down and was called for unsportsmanlike AFTER the play it was a 15-yard penalty and 1st and 25.

I think it should still be that way. Here’s a reason why:

If the offense commits a holding penalty let’s say on 1st and 10, the 10 yards are stepped off and it’s is now 1st and 20. Not still 1st and 10 minus the yards.

My point being if the penalty is after the play, the ball is spotted 1st and 10 and the penalty assessed like any other.

BTW KState fumbled the opening kickoff and Kansas scored. Wildcats answered to tie it. On next possession Kansas fumbles and KState scoops and scores to take a 14-7 lead on a rainy day in Lawrence.

Here’s how holding enforcement works in college football (NCAA rules):

If the holding occurs behind the line of scrimmage, the 10-yard penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul.

Example: On 1st and 10 from the A-30, the quarterback drops back to the A-25, and a lineman holds there. The penalty is enforced from the A-25 → new spot is the A-15 (1st and 25).

If the holding occurs beyond the line of scrimmage, the penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul as well.

Example: On a screen pass, the receiver catches the ball at the A-35 (line of scrimmage A-30), and a teammate holds at the A-40. The foul is enforced from the A-40 → new spot is the A-30.

If the holding occurs at or behind the line on a running play, it’s typically enforced from the spot of the foul, unless special momentum/loose-ball rules apply.

It wasn't a holding call. Top is referring to a play where a KState player on the bench, pushed a Kansas player to the ground after the play was over. The initial play went OOBs on the Kstate sideline and that's when the UC penalty happened. The result of the play was a 1st down for KState and then they backed Kstate up 15 yards from the end of the play which was the at the 41 yard line.

So it was 1st and 10 KState from the 26.
Top wants it to be 1st and 25 from the 41.

Correct. Just saying that is how it used to be. The distinction being made is it happened after a first down was achieved. I don’t see the logic in that. Just saying.

Correct, I was correcting the analogy...if the holding in his comparison is beyond the LOS then the yardage counts.
