A note on the Big Ten expansion vote

Several of you have asked about the voting process for Big Ten expansion, and I have an answer for you.

According to the Big Ten's bylaws, an institution first must apply for admission to the league's Council of Presidents/Chancellors. The COP/C then votes, and it takes 70 percent of the council, or eight of the 11 members, to approve the candidate for admission to the league. So a candidate doesn't need to earn a unanimous vote to be admitted to the Big Ten, as is the case in the Pac-10.

Since the Big Ten has accelerated its push for expansion, a vote or votes on expansion candidates could take place in early June during the league's meeting of presidents and chancellors. Remember that because a vote takes place after an institution applies for admission, the COP/C only votes on institutions that want to be part of the Big Ten.

Here's a step-by-step outline of how the process could work:

* Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and the league's presidents and chancellors meet in Washington, site of the Association of American Universities spring meetings, to discuss expansion candidates. Delany then would inform Michigan State president Lou Anna K. Simon, chair of the COP/C, that the league intends to begin formal discussions with candidates.
* Delany attends BCS meetings Tuesday-Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he could notify commissioners of the affected leagues or Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick of the Big Ten's intentions. The Big Ten doesn't want to tamper with institutions before informing their conference commissioners.
* The courting process begins between the Big Ten and expansion candidates (for some, it wouldn't take much).
* The Big Ten holds its meetings of coaches (football, men's basketball, women's basketball) and athletic directors on May 17-19 in Chicago, where expansion will continue to be discussed.
* An institution or multiple institutions formally apply for Big Ten membership. The COP/C votes in early June and the league officially expands.

Needless to say, it's an exciting time in the Big Ten, so stay tuned.

TCU is in the 15 schools they are discussing. Joe Pa doesn't want a bunch of sissies, they already have too many. He also said they want someone who is good at sports across the board. So, just look at the numbers, situation, and TCU has to be at the top.

And nobody in the 10 wants to talk about their terrible image the last several years. Herbstreit embarrassed them all in a spontaneous outburst on the Sat morn show.. So, could the arrogance be diminishing? Probably not, but it might..

Could TCU help them. Hell yes.

Would we be interested considering all the money? I don't know about that?

I bet you $100 million that TCU isn't on their list.

But if we were, any decision maker at TCU who hesitated for even a moment before accepting the invite should be committed to a mental institution.

Yeah, I picked up on that. And it seems like an extensive list, but once you consider most of the Big East, most of the Big 12, a handful of ACC schools and Notre Dame, 15 fills up pretty quick. TCU is a fine academic institution with some fantastic sports teams, but we just don't have the drawing power the Big Ten is looking for. They can throw out whatever criteria they want, but in the end whoever gets in will have to be able to get new viewers to tune in and watch the Big Ten Network (or at least complain to their cable company enough to get it added to their line-up). TCU isn't going to get that done.

So halfway, Big 10 viewers don't like to watch good football? And the big 10 doesn't want to correct a bad, horrible image?

Give me a break. Probably not going to happen, but it will only be ignorance and arrogance that prevents it..

The Mtn isn't on FW cable. Or Arlington. Or Dallas.

That alone says it all. Unfortunately.

Yeah, that's not helping our case for getting into a big-money conference. And yet the Big Ten Network is on my basic tier.

If the Big 10 by some chance does call. CGP just needs to hang up the phone. The Mountain West Conference has been a good fit for TCU.

Not at all likely, but it depends on what the conference's marketing strategy is. If the strategy is to pick a team that, on it's own, brings significant TV viewers to the table, that's not TCU. However, if the marketing strategy is to penetrate the Texas market for TV sets and recruits, TCU could be an adequate distribution channel for their brand assuming they can't get UT or A&M. The strategy would be that the quality and tradition of their conference brand and its teams will attract the TV viewers, with TCU just being their chosen local franchisee. The media would help as well. An upgraded recruiting base and TCU's quality program would be lagniappe. Likely? No.

Just ready on the Big East BB that the Big 10/11 Commissioner will be addressing the news media at lunch tomorrow at the BCS meeting in Phoenix, most likely to just announce that they are expanding... but no names!
