MSVU just had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead. They threw the ball away and now tcu has 2 free throws to ice it. Cross your fingers.

That was the last pre-conference tune-up. Now we have to figure out how to win a few in the Big 12 and keep recruiting/building. Announcing a project to improve DMC would probably help in the recruiting category.

POSTGAME QUOTES

TCU 67, Mississippi Valley State 64

Fort Worth, Texas (Daniel-Meyer Coliseum)

Dec. 30, 2012

Attendance: 3,868

TCU HEAD COACH TRENT JOHNSON

Opening Statement:

“With the exception of the first five minutes, when I felt we did a good job playing and executing together, I felt the last 35 minutes were not very good and very disappointing. Mississippi Valley State’s energy was a lot better than ours. Their ability to get to loose balls, rebound and play together was a lot better than us, which is disappointing. One of the things I talked about with this group about before the Rice game was showing a (higher) level of maturity.”

On competition level:

“Sometimes teams get caught up in the won-loss records with Rice having only two wins and this team being winless. We need to have a respect for our competition, we need to play to the level that we are at and we didn’t do that. We didn’t do that against Rice in the last 10 minutes when we got a lead, and we didn’t do that here. The thing that was very disturbing was that our guys starting searching for their own shots. They would take an extra dribble or would give up a post advantage. That bothered me.”

On build up to the game:

“It is an excuse if you talk about a layoff. It is an excuse if you talk about Christmas and all of that. We have had two practices a day for three days. What we have looked like in practice is completely different from what we looked like today.”

On the play of Nate Butler Lind:

“One positive was the job Nate (Butler Lind) did on (Davon) Usher. The kid was averaging 16 points a game, and he had exploded for 33 at Northwestern. He is a guy that has to have the ball. The other guys stepped up for them. The reason I think he had a hard time was that Nate face guarded him everywhere on the floor. The thing I like about Usher is that he didn’t try to force it, and his teammates stepped up and made plays.”

On preparing for Big 12 play:

“The good thing about league play is that everyone we are going to play is strong, quick and talented. It is going to be fun for me, but we are going to see how much courage our guys have. They are going to have to step up. This is conference play and big-boy basketball. There is no place for the weak. We need to understand that each possession is important.”
