The highest unsigned pick from the 2016 Draft, Lodolo spurned the Pirates as a supplemental first-rounder (No. 41 overall) from a California high school. He immediately stepped into Texas Christian's rotation as a freshman but is somewhat of an enigma because his performances have been more respectable than dominant. If he takes a step forward as a junior, he could be the first college pitcher drafted and beat out Lance Broadway (No. 15 overall in 2005) as the highest pick in Horned Frogs history.

Lodolo usually works at 90-94 mph and peaks at 96 with sink on his fastball, using his 6-foot-6 frame to deliver it on a steep downhill plane. While his changeup is a bit firm at times, it's his most reliable secondary pitch because he sells it well and it has good action at the plate. He has inconsistent feel for spinning his curveball, which flattens out when he doesn't stay on top of it.

MLB Pipeline said:
Lodolo misses plenty of bats yet also gets hit harder than he should because he lacks command of each of his pitches. He doesn't always maintain his three-quarters arm slot and has more success when he does. He has a long, lean body that could add significant strength and an easy delivery.

There's also uncertainty with the top arms at four-year colleges, all of whom are left-handers: Duke's Graeme Stinson, Kentucky's Zack Thompson and Texas Christian's Nick Lodolo. Stinson has to prove he can succeed and hold up as a starter after relieving for most of his college career, and Thompson missed two months last spring with an elbow injury that didn't require surgery. Lodolo was the highest unsigned pick in the 2016 Draft (No. 41 overall, Pirates) but has been more respectable than dominant with the Horned Frogs.
