Texas found a rival to replace Texas A&M.

And unfortunately a whole lot more. Mostly, it found a much better team than itself, and that’s troubling.

Now Texas just needs to relocate its once-explosive offense, its full-blown creativity beyond a fake Statue of Liberty play that didn’t work, the solid confidence it had gained by winning four in a row, its likely bowl destination… Well, everything, in other words.

The 18th-ranked Longhorns lost their final home football game, 20-13 to TCU but oh so much more.

Just when they had even the most remote chance at a BCS bowl and a share of the Big 12 championship — maybe even the biggest share, given the myriad tie-breakers to separate ties — they puckered up.

Gone is a shot at the Fiesta Bowl and maybe even the Cotton Bowl if they fall to league-leading Kansas State on the road next Saturday, and back are concerns about the same disturbing Texas rush defense and some of the same reservations about Mack Brown’s ability to lead this program back to prominence. A collective 21-15 record since the Rose Bowl loss to Alabama, including three straight seasons of at least three losses, doesn’t exactly stir the souls of Longhorn patriots. ...

This, however, looked nothing like an upset. TCU mauled Texas. It chewed up the Longhorns and spit them out and took away everything Brown and his team had tried so hard to reconstruct after the disaster that was Oklahoma. Brown’s Longhorns are customarily great after Oklahoma in part because they no longer have to play Oklahoma.

But they will have to play the Sooners again next season. As well as the fast-maturing Frogs, neither of which bodes well for the locals. Looks like TCU just may fill that rivalry void for Texas.

Kirk Bohls is a terrific writer and has a history of calling out Mack and his college aged cupcakes. Its quite refreshing actually but is not surprising. Believe he may be the only writer in Austin allowed to question the kingdom so often
