Why Olivia Miles put WNBA dreams on hold, transferred to TCU for one more year in school

Miles was previously an All-American at Notre Dame, but missed the 2023-24 season due to a torn ACL.

Notre Dame guard Olivia Miles (5) advances the ball during the second half in the first...

Olivia Miles might have been playing this weekend along with WNBA rookie Paige Bueckers at the league’s All-Star Game.

But Miles decided to return to college this year instead of going to the WNBA draft as a projected lottery pick. The former Notre Dame star transferred to TCU to try to improve her game, earn some extra NIL money and continue to grow her brand.

“I think it was a mixture of me listening to my body and what I needed and also just another year to develop, you know be in a system where it’ll favor me and I’ll have great teammates and a great coach around me,” Miles told The Associated Press. ”I’ll have a lot of fun so I’m just very excited for that."

Has there ever been a sport so shamelessly overpromoted as the WNBA by ESPN? It's almost comical how hard they are trying to get people to pay attention to it, they pretty much give it equal billing to all other sports on all of ESPN's marketing and coverage. Meanwhile, the NBA just signed a media rights deal worth 34.5x more than the deal the WNBA just signed.

i don't know how a college sports fan converts to fascination with the pros, period. the nba, wnba, mlb, whatever, even the nfl at times puts me to sleep. maybe they are so good that perfection becomes the enemy of entertainment?

the nba is popular worldwide, thus the seemingly outrageous pay for talent. the wnba is being promoted now mostly around catlin clark's immense popularity. i watch neither. but i'm old.

Let's be honest, the basketball just isn't very good. I can't imagine that sport is going to stay popular very long.

As for the NBA, IMO the product is much improved over what it was 20 years ago. Yeah, they shoot way too many threes, but the biggest problem is that they just play way too many games. 82 games to only eliminate half the teams from the playoffs makes for a whole bunch of games that don't really matter.

I agree that the basketball isn't very enjoyable to watch for those used to NBA and college MBB. But the basketball is quite a bit better than it was a decade or even 5 years ago. And I think it will continue to improve. That is in part due to the exposure given by the NBA and ESPN.

They are playing a long game, which is something pretty rare in today's sports/entertainment landscape. Eventually it will become enjoyable to watch. Young women see what's possible and aspire to push boundaries. You can argue that it's the case across the board in women's sports, including those not being propped up by the media. (College women's golf is one example--many programs set new scoring average records every year.) So maybe the media don't need to shovel it so hard. But I'm glad to see the improvement.

Check the calendar. Sorry to report.

LeBron was in the NBA 20 years ago. Feel old yet?
