Expectations were high for Michigan State and TCU after each posted 11 victories during the 2011 season.
For one reason or another, neither lived up to the hype.

The Spartans and Horned Frogs will look to end disappointing campaigns on a positive note when two strong defensive teams meet in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl on Dec. 29 at Sun Devil Stadium.

An experienced offense was also a major factor as Michigan State won the Big Ten Legends Division last season before beating Georgia in the Outback Bowl to finish 11-3.

The Spartans began 2012 ranked 13th and reached as high as No. 10, but the losses of last year's stars - quarterback Kirk Cousins and receivers B.J. Cunningham and Keshawn Martin - proved difficult to overcome as Michigan State (6-6) ranked ninth in the Big Ten gaining an average of 370.3 yards.

"We lost 95 percent of our passing offense from last year, whether it be the quarterback, two tight ends, three wide receivers and a tailback as well," coach Mark Dantonio said. "So our guys came in inexperienced." ...

No mention of the other players lost that contributed to our record. Poor writing and analysis.

MSU enrolls something like 55,000, and has for a while. They have a ton of fans and alums compared to TCU. So it's not surprising that a wire service writer would play to the (much) bigger audience.

Mentioned that Frogs are last in the Big 12 in rushing while MSU has all Big 10 running back. Woe is us. Must be why TCU is favored in Vegas.

Someone made the mistake of using alum numbers to prejudge TV audience. Bet even money that if TCU and Mich State were on at the same time, TCU would draw more.

One reason is, in Texas, any Texas college with a reputation, will be watched by dang near every football fan in the state. Plus TCU has a national brand right now, after the Rose, that exceeds MSU... I watched the Ags beat Alabama, just because it was Texas kids and I enjoyed seeing 'em beat Bama...

Agree that TCU has more of a national brand right now (at least in football). If MSU had made the Rose Bowl one of the last two years, it may have been different. But as it stands, TCU>MSU in perception right now.

Secondly, Texas is WAY closer to Arizona than Michigan is. MSU has a pretty big alum base but that doesn't mean everyone from the east or even northern Cali is going to blow a grand+ to go to the freaking Buffalo Wild Wings bowl to watch a 6-6 team that has nearly pissed every close game away.
