Ole Miss moves up spot in College Football Playoff rankings; Ohio State still No. 1

Story by Associated Press

Ole Miss lost a coach and moved up a spot anyway. Notre Dame didn’t lose a thing but the Irish fell.

The release Tuesday of the latest College Football Playoff rankings produced its fair share of eye-openers and head-scratchers — plenty to talk about before the final rankings and the actual pairings for the 12-team playoff come out this weekend after a slate of conference title games.

Undefeated Ohio State and Indiana remained at 1 and 2 in the rankings, while Georgia moved to third and Texas Tech rose to No. 4.

The rest of the top 12: Oregon, Mississippi, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame, BYU and Miami.

It's funny how BYU fans are so adamant about this. It's as if they know they are going to lose.

If they deserve to be in the playoffs, they should beat Tech.
if they lose close, you would put Texas in over them?

"If they deserve to be in the playoffs, they should beat Tech."
Somebody should have told Ohio St. that in 2014.

Boom. That Just Happened.

So if Tech loses they don't deserve to be in?
It depends. Probably deserve to be in. But tell me the score of the game and the scores of the other games (mainly Alabama-Georgia) and I'll tell you who I think should be in.

If BYU loses they shouldn't be in barring some weird outcomes. They sure as hell shouldn't be in ahead of ND. Tech has a much stronger case of being in with a loss than BYU does IMO.

If the 2 guaranteed spots for the XII was ever really a thing, they were stupid not to take it ( from a what’s best for TCU viewpoint).

Hoo boy, RG3. Has he heard of Notre Dame?
sooo much to unpack there. gonna leave an obvious part alone.

now if he was talking about mouse ears (abc/espn), he would have a very good point considering how he, Pollack and Samantha were fired. And, considering who the puppet master in part is for the CFP, he is talking about them.

If BYU has two losses, both to the #2/3 team, won't their record be tied with others and their losses better? And Notre Dame lost to two teams that didn't even make their own conference championship games, and won't play in a conference championship game. If BYU goes 11-2, we should reward a 10-2 team over them?

I'm not so sure BYU loses this weekend. Everybody seems to agree they looked flat the first match up.
But it is hard to trust that considering the D line they were playing against. That would force a youngster for sure. But Cougs have looked nasty physical in recent weeks.

Here's what you aren't accounting for. ....
- I don't know how bad BYU will lose Saturday if they lose but they lost the first time by 25 points. I think that's relevant. That's not just a loss. That's getting your ass kicked and not being competitive.
- You say ND lost to two teams "that didn't even make their CCG" as if those are some kind of average teams. With 16 teams in leagues these days, there are plenty of quality teams that "don't even make their CCG". One is a lock for the CFP and lot of people think the other one should be in as well. Lost by a total of 3 points. I think that's relevant.
- BYU also beat 3-9 Colorado by 3 points. Notre Dame's closest win to an unranked team was 15 points. I think that speaks to the overall quality of the team.
- They both had a similar win against a ranked team, ND by 10 over USC and BYU by 3 over Utah. Pretty much a draw there.
