AP: Big 12 commish says league feels good at 10 teams

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the 10-team league feels good about where it is right now while still keeping an eye on what is happening with other conferences across the country.

"We continue to watch the landscape," Bowlsby said Wednesday at the NCAA convention. "Until we're persuaded that larger is better, we feel pretty good about right where we are."

The league's athletic directors have a regular meeting later this month in Dallas. Bowlsby said part of their discussions will include the advantages of staying with their membership, plus the advantages and disadvantages of possibly adding to that.

"If you get bigger, do you have to get to 16? Do you get all the benefits at 14? Do you get them at 12?" Bowlsby said. "I just think there's a real shortage of empirical evidence that can guide our decisions." ...

I like the round robin because you ge a a true winner of the conference, however I dont like it because there are no breaks in the schedule. While SEC top teams skip having to play other top teams in the conference and have two byes and play a cream puff late into the season, Big 12 is beating itself up week to week. By the time bowl games roll in Big 12 is hurt b/c of the grueling schedule and SEC is fresh having good size breaks as 14 allows flexibility.

Big 12 continues to make dumb decisions. I am not a fan of Bowlsby who seems like a puppet...maybe he will surprise me, maybe he knows what he is doing...or maybe a large university to be unnamed pulls his strings???

Idiot watching the landscape. League needs more teams and a playoff. In this environment, if you are not moving forward you are dead.

Of course it's all about TV money. More teams means you are in more markets, but you split the check with more schools. Expansion makes sense only when it makes the check for each school bigger.

EVERYBODY'S watching the landscape right now. And what they are watching is the courts, waiting to see how the Maryland exit fee case plays out. The lower the exit fee gets, the more likely it becomes that we'll see more moves - including the Big 12. And the Big 12 is not ANYBODY'S 1st choice should that happen.

Why is that so hard for people to understand?

We are waiting for the b10 and sec to take their teams and then go to 12 or most likely 14. All the public statements are rubbish. My guess is Miami, Florida st, Clemson and 4th is up in the air.

You mean like this year, where OU was crown 'co-champioe' despite losing to KSU and where we wwnt into the final two weekend with the very real possibility of a four-way tie?

But everyone does play everyone...maybe that's the plus about the round robin play. I like the bigger conference much better, starting the season earlier and having a freedom to strategically place OOC games where you want in the schedule...which has helped the SEC stay healthy and strong when bowl time comes around.
