Alamo Bowl Who is going!

2017 was the last time TCU Football was in the Alamo City, and things have changed If you can, get off the Riverwalk to see something better/newer/different. Here are some considerations:

+The Gunter Hotel downtown, which recently underwent a $57M renovation, is the place where famous bluesman, Robert Johnson (of Crossroads fame) recorded an album in in 1936 (his room is now a suite named after him). Bonus: See if you can find the hidden door in the lobby that leads to an upscale speakeasy.

+Hit The Pearl, a vibrant and upscale dining/drinking/shopping area that is a short Uber ride from your downtown hotel. Too many good places to list, but try the Hotel Emma and its Sternewirth Bar as a jumping off place.

+As TCU people, we all know good BBQ, and Pinkerton’s is a Texas Monthly Top 50 place that is really good and located downtown (probably in walking distance of your hotel). yes, it’s the same Pinkerton’s as the one in Houston.

If you visit the Riverwalk, here are 3 good spots:

-The Esquire Tavern: longest oak/wood bar in America, and a great classic cocktail place that is dark and cool inside. Good food menu as well.

-Tokyo Cowboy Restaurant & Bar: combining Japanese and Texas fare, it also has a great cocktail menu and lots of Japanese whisky. Reservations recommended.

-One short flight of stairs down from Tokyo Cowboy is a newish Tiki bar called Hugman’s Oasis. Dark, cool, underground, and much like the classic Trader Vic’s tiki bar.

If you are staying downtown and looking for a breakfast place, or if you just have a sweet tooth, Paris Baguette just opened, which has all sorts of French pastries, good breads, cakes, and coffee.

Does anybody have restaurant recommendations on the Riverwalk for Tex-Mex/Mexican food?
La Fonda on Main. It bills itself as SA’s oldest Mexican Restaurant (1932), and it’s really good with a great atmosphere too (plus awesome red sangria). It’s not on the Riverwalk, thankfully, yet only a 10 minute Uber ride away from your downtown hotel. Think of it as a smaller version of Joe T’s (e.g. dining inside or on a lush outdoor patio) with a more sophisticated menu. Good/safe neighborhood too.

La Fogata on Vance Jackson.. about 20 mins. north of downtown is quite good as well, nice outdoor patio too.

Those of us who live here do not go to the Riverwalk for Mexican food, but for the atmosphere. But, I would try Rita's. Never been to their Riverwalk location, but they have great food at their original spot. Boudro's on the Riverwalk gets consistently good reviews. Schilo's on Commerce near Riverwalk is great for breakfast lunch or dinner - a long-time German place. They make their own root beer. My kids loved their root beer. Paesano's is great for upscale Italian. Alamo Biscuit Co. is new, but saw a good review. The Esquire Tavern - access from the Riverwalk and on Commerce st. - is good for a more sophisticated type of Texas food. My personal favorite, best value would be Esquire Tavern and Boudro's - but none of the Riverwalk places are bad.
Paesano's is very good... We get in on Sunday afternoon, may do dinner there.

For those of you going down on the weekend, there's a pep rally on Sunday. You can also buy a seat on one of the barges that's in the parade leading into the pep rally.

Here's a link to some of the events going on, from the Alamo Bowl website.

The legendary Menger Bar in SA was voted one of the Top 10 Most Historic Bars in the United States. Built in 1887 as an exact replica of London’s House of Lords Pub, the bar is inside the historic Menger Hotel (reportedly haunted), which is right next door to the Alamo.

In 1898, Theodore Roosevelt set up an enlistment table at the Menger Bar and recruited over 1,250 men to form the Rough Riders, a volunteer regiment. The bartender will gladly show you the bullet holes in the wall where the Rough Riders got loaded and fired off a few gunshots. It’s not open all that late (11 pm weekdays and midnight on Fri/Sat), so go early.

I guess ticket sales thru TCU aren't going as well as they thought they would. I just got my 3rd email since Thursday about buying tickets thru TCU.
It's a busy time of the year. The more tickets we can sell, the better it is for us making the Alamodome a harder place for the opponent to play.

I mean it does suck being on a Tuesday before NYE. It’s usually been on the holiday itself.
I think the one of the biggest factors is the seating process TCU uses. Everyone knows that if you go thru the school, you're probably going to end up with a [ Finebaum ]ty seat unless you're near the top of the priority points list. I'm near the bottom of the priority points list so I know I would end up with a [ Finebaum ]ty seat. We bought 8 thru ticketmaster, sec.131 row 11.
