Abilene Reporter-News: Pachall set to re-enroll at TCU but return as starting QB far from guaranteed

Sports smorgasbord, while wondering whatever happened to former Houston Astros player and one-time Brownwood resident Walter "No Neck" Williams:

Casey Pachall has completed the necessary paper work process to re-enroll at TCU for the spring semester, two sources told the Fort Worth newspaper, and the former Brownwood quarterback has met all the necessary requirements to return to the school.

No decision has been made for him to rejoin the Horned Frogs although coach Gary Patterson left the door open when he announced in the fall that Pachall was leaving school to enter a treatment center for drugs and alcohol use. He had led the Frogs to four wins before he left.

But if he is accepted by the coaches, there is no guarantee that Pachall will be the starting quarterback, especially after the play of Trevone Boykin, a redshirt freshman who had been slated to play running back. Boykin led the Frogs to big wins over Baylor, West Virginia and Texas, completing 154 of 263 passes for 15 touchdowns, while being picked off nine times. And he got them into a bowl game against Michigan State. He is a superior runner, but is not as accurate a passer as Pachall, who also works better out of the pocket.

If Pachall does return, he has the right to win the job back, but Boykin deserves the chance to retain his job. That should be a battle worth watching.

Briles happy in Waco ...

Nothing new there about CP, but I was surprised to see Bill Hart's byline......I knew Bill 50-plus years ago in West Texas and he was somewhat older than I was then. Didn't know he was still doing some writing...

Good luck Casey. I hope everything works out best for you regardless of whether or not I see you on the field. But, I have a feeling you'll be playing, and better than ever. Get to that 12th step.

That first line of the story reminds me of Blackie Sherrod's columns in the DMN . . ."Scattershooting while wondering whatever happened to. . . "

Devonte Fields is set to return for his sophomore season as the reigning Defensive Player of the Year in the Big XII Conference.......but his position as starting DE is far from guaranteed.

Coach Patterson and staff will ensure the players who give TCU the best chance to win will start at every position. No one on the team has anything guaranteed to them.

(No offense to the writer of the article)

As much as Boykin has done for the program, it defies logic that Pachall wouldn't be our QB next year. Was especially impressed with Boykin in the OU game. We didn't block well in that game and he came under a bunch of pressure. He still made some impressive plays and hit two bombs. Made his usual good runs. Heck of a player. Just a freshman too, it is hard to remember, with his success.

Pachall is just a special talent with a rocket arm, accurate as any QB we have ever had.. Our coaches have done a super job in recent years, evaluating and recruiting QB's.....

Agree but I'm betting there is no announcement of a starter until Fall practice at the earliest.
