Abilene Reporter-News: Former ACU coach Thomsen named interim head coach at Tech

Less than a year after he resigned as Abilene Christian University’s head coach to become a Division I assistant, Chris Thomsen is getting a chance to lead a major college football program — at least for one game.

Thomsen was named Texas Tech’s interim head coach on Monday, two days after Tommy Tuberville resigned as the Red Raiders’ coach to take the head coaching job at Cincinnati.

Thomsen will coach the Red Raiders (7-5) against Minnesota (6-6) at the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas on Dec. 28 at Reliant Stadium.

Talking by phone Monday evening, Thomsen said he didn’t think he would be in this position when he left ACU almost a year ago. ...

Thomsen, who grew up in Vernon, was a dual sport athlete at TCU (1988-90). He was a tight end for the Horned Frogs football team all three years and also played baseball one season and was drafted in the 17th round by the Oakland Athletics. Thomsen played two seasons in the A’s organization, before transferring to ACU in 1993 to play his final year of football for the Wildcats.
