Thought this was an interesting article on Rivals. Breaks down the 5* guys from the last two recruiting classes and what they have done so far.

Had posted earlier, but chickened out after thinking about it, so will ask a question instead--what about the players who weren't redshirted but haven't played? Does the fact that they haven't played allow them to redshirt after the fact or is it a designation you have to have before the season (or shortly into the season)? If you have to be designated a redshirt, why not automatically redshirt all freshmen unless/until you need them? Seems like a waste to have a 5* guy ride the pine all year and burn a year of eligibility.

Um no, that's not true.

Each school as a specific number of redshirted that they can give out every year (I'm not sure what that number is, but I know there's limit). And each student-athlete is allowed one redshirt season per collegiate career. The medical redshirt is also another type that is allowed should a player meet the requirements for that.

You do not declare a red shirt before the season, as soon as your cleats touch the grass for one play you can not red shirt, if you do not play a down of football all year you can use a red shirt to gain a fifth year of eligibility. I am not aware of a limit to red shirts per a school each year, but there may well be one. Players can only red shirt once in a career.

Medical red shirts can be requested for players that had a season ending injury that occurred during the first three games of the season. They are not always granted. You can sometimes get a sixth year of eligibility if you were injured during the first three games of your red shirt senior year (Case Keenum and Jason White).

You're spot on except there used to be an allowance for non conference games. You could play a small amount of plays in those and not lose your redshirt. Not sure if it still applies or not, but it's worth mentioning.
