247sports: TCU commit hears from Texas, Oregon

Brian Perroni

SAN ANTONIO – Dallas Lincoln wide receiver Emanuel Porter had perhaps the most out-of-the-blue recruitment of any player in the Lone Star State in recent memory.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound junior had never played football prior to this season. Instead he was a basketball standout at school known for its hoops prowess. However, this past summer he decided to try his hand at football.

Before ever suiting up for a game, he was rewarded with an offer from in-state TCU and ended up committing almost immediately. ...

Well this hasnt been the best news morning. Rumor of Boyce going pro, Byrd transferring, and now Porter looking around.

Yeah, even with Boyce leaving (if he is) we still have a good, talented and young set of WR's in Brown, Carter, Porter, White, Listenby (SP?) and some others.

Story and Doctson. I will hate it if Josh leaves but our depth at WR makes it one of the least difficult positions to lose a talent.

I agree, but I feel like we have played this game before.

"Losing Ed Wesley sucks, but won't hurt too much because we still have Waymon James and Matthew Tucker."

"Hate losing Tanner Brock but Gildon and Cain should be a solid starting two at the LB spots."

Still a Frog. Everybody knows Mack and Kelly are gone next year. The is a reason Franklin at Vandy and Charlie Strong at UL pushed their move to next season. Huge benefit of GP stability is that a developing player like Porter won't get lost in a coaching turnover.

“I’m still committed to TCU for sure,” he said. “I’m looking at other schools but I’m still committed"

can't blame the kid, trying to get the best deal. I mean come on though, they need to call it something else. I've committed unless I get a better deal.....

Yeah, but in that we had 2 proven backups, and another loss (Injury, stupidity, grade, whatever) and it was gonna hurt. At WR we have a good core of proven guys that can take up the slack, even of loosing the top spot guy. Don't think Carter is much off taking the top spot anyway, just needs some hands work and I think he might be able to take that from Boyce even if he does stay.

He's a kid who's getting alot of attention. Can't really blame him. I'm sure he respects us for offering so early but to say he should ignore big programs when they come calling is a little naive. How many rock stars are still with their high school sweathearts and not the latest 'it' actress?

IMHO the NCAA really needs to tighten up the recruiting process. It's become a fiasco that makes it difficult for schools and kids to plan. Commitments should be just that, both ways. After all, a school (unless you're playing the A&M grayshirt game) commits big-time to a kid, tying up a scholly and sometimes dropping recruitment of other kids. And how would you feel if you were a kid whose scholarship offer turned out to be a bill of goods b/c a university (cough, aggies, cough) decided they had a better option?

Consider these Ks complete with tortious interference in cases like this, and the whole thing stops being ridiculous.

Agreed. Carter's like Dez Braynt early in his career. Seems to drop the easy ones, but the way he can pull the one handed ones out of thin air shows me enough to think he'll get it turned around (like Dez seems to be doing). And once he does...look out.
