TCU's Innis Gaines learned plenty from injury shortened season

By Jeremy Clark

TCU senior strong safety Innis Gaines was on pace to have his best season as a Frog in 2018. Six games into the season the 6-foot-2, 208-pounder had collected 31 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss.

Against Ohio State on national television, Gaines had perhaps the best game of his career as he recorded a career-high 9 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups against the Buckeyes. Gaines essentially became a household name to fans in the Big 12 following that game.

Unfortunately, his bright season ended in the Frogs’ 17-14 loss to Texas Tech. Gaines suffered a season-ending injury in the loss and it was noticeable how much the Frogs would miss him just two plays after the injury as the Red Raiders scored the go-ahead touchdown on a deep vertical pass down the seam.

"Gaines wasn’t the only defensive starter to miss last season; defensive tackle Ross Blacklock also missed the season. Despite the loss of both players, the Frogs still managed to lead the Big 12 in total defense. Gaines says that proves TCU has good depth and he feels with the return of him and Blacklock with the addition of Montrel Wilson, the Frogs could be even better on defense."

With the train load of injuries we had last year, we still lead in defense.
