TCU NT Damonic Williams discusses Frogs' fall camp

ByJEREMY CLARK

TCU true freshman nose tackle Damonic Williams has been one of the most talked about players on the Frogs' roster ever since he arrived in January as an early enrollee. Wiliams went through spring camp and immediately became one of the most impressive players on the defensive side of the ball.

Fast forward to fall camp, Williams picked up where he left off in the spring - and then some. The youngest player on the roster at just 17 years old (he turns 18 on Sept. 4), Williams has made big plays in camp and worked himself into a position where he's working with the first team defense. Williams met with the media following Monday's practice to discuss his transition to college ball, how he's grown and how well he things the defensive line can be.

It will probably still be a bit of a shock to him when he walks out on that field in Boulder, but I'm betting he'll get right pretty fast.
Continually amazed by the volume and consistency of the not-too-subtle jabs at the previous staff by players across the board, from 1st-year guys to 6th-year guys. And they clearly don't seem to mean it to be ugly at all, they just come across as sincere and honest. Some of the first words out of his mouth had to do with guys who, "didn't care that much," but now are all-in and have the fire back in their belly. This should remove any lingering doubt for all of us about whether it was time for a change.

great points and consider that dam goes on to mention 4 senior defensive linemen by name who have taken it upon themselves to guide him through this transition

those are the actions of players who have bought in and care what follows them in this program and not the actions of guys playing out the string

was struck by the self reflective tone he took at the end where he mentioned going to the s&c staff and asking how much his body has changed in roughly 8 months as he was now able to do things he couldn't have done a year ago in high school

Almost without exception, every player mentions the gains they’ve made that are directly due to the strength, conditioning, diet, & recovery programs. Coach Kaz has quietly become this team’s secret weapon!

It's as though those of us who concluded--confessing to a complete lack of any inside information--in mid-2018 that TCU football was broken, then kept saying that for four years, were right. I'm not at all glad to have been right, but we were. I wish we'd started to fix it in December of 2019.

I suppose if you looked closely enough, you could have seen a lot fundamentals being done wrong going back much further than that. But on-field success rarely instigates intense self-reflection. Whether in business, or sports, or just about anything else, when an organization is having bottom-line success, they usually either don't take a hard look in the mirror at what they are doing right and wrong, or if they do, it's very difficult to have anyone in position to do something about it, take it seriously.
At TCU we'd been so bad for so long, if anyone had said anything critical during Gary's first 15 years or so, they'd have likely gotten invited to a beat-down at Frog Fountain. Only when we started losing, were the folks in power willing to see the problems that had long existed and do something about it.

BTW, related to the topic of Damonic's body shape, this is another area where I think even with the improvements, we are still missing a huge opportunity. TCU has from what I understand, a really solid Department of Nutritional Sciences. I would love to see the Athletic Department pair up students in that program directly with specific athletes to design an individualized nutritional regime, and help them monitor their progress.
It seems like Kaz is obviously doing a great job, but he's only one guy and can't possibly give each player the level of individual attention that a student in the nutrition program could. The nutritionists could tailor their efforts to meet Kaz's goals, and help the players attain those gains all the faster. Would be great for the players, and a pretty stout achievement to put on the resume for the Nutrition students.

I don’t know about that being a secret, man. Kaz doesn’t seem like the quite type. I’ve seen the IG videos…He’s louder than hell when leading stretching warmups.

the crazy thing is that the advancements in recovery science the last 10-15 years are not some secrets smuggled out of eastern europe or out from behind the bamboo curtain

these are things that have been out there with established data in multiple sports and organizations

two big parts were a willingness to grow and adapt as well as direct the needed resources

Don’t care about his voice.
I was alluding to the fake dumpster fire created by some TCU fans that swirled around Kaz as he accepted the job.
He was labeled as a problem/risk by some fans & administrators, but just the opposite has proven to be true.

Indeed. One of those people was me, for I didn't want any stink of [ Baylor accusations ] U. to follow any of Warden Art's staff onto us. I don't see how that was an unreasonable concern at the time.

As events have unfolded, it is good to see that none of that stink has billowed forth, and that he has become a guide and teacher to the kids in an extremely positive way. I am glad to be wrong.

Art Briles was loved by most at Baylor and turned out to be a dumpster fire. By our statistical N-2, it would be best to [ Finebaum ] on every aspect of every new coach.

Yeah, I picked up on that In your post. I was just scheissing around with my response. Kaz the professional was not my concern. I’ve used his programming several times and seen great results. Kaz the person might have had some people questioning him though due to previous affiliations.

I’m glad the dude is well liked by the team and that he can get them fired up.
