Junior LHP Ben Abeldt will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a partially torn UCL, and be lost for the 2025 season, sources confirmed to HornedFrogBlitz.

The loss is a major one for the Horned Frogs, who anticipated Abeldt starting at the front of a retooled weekend rotation that was already working to replace 2024 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and 2nd team All-American Payton Tolle.

Abeldt spent his first two seasons in the back of TCU's bullpen, earning First Team Freshman All-American honors from D1 Baseball and Baseball America in 2023, and joining the 2024 USA National Collegiate Team.

Is it my understanding they don't do the old Tommy John surgery, that there is a more modern treatment/repair that shortens and improves recovery?

The Tommy John procedure they do in Central America is more of a low budget process that involves immobilizing the arm by fashioning a sling using Tommy John brand men's underwear and allowing it to heal on its own and hoping for the best.

I've got a pair of Tommy Johns that are older than my oldest daughter...

The Athletic Gawdz are angry over the women's basketball season, so once again a TCU team is crippled if not immobilized....Seems to happen at least once every academic year to major sports....

There's something called Internal Brace Surgery which sometimes is an option and can have a slightly shorter recovery time.
