TCU football: Sonny Dykes details new OC Kendal Briles' ability to relate with players, Horned Frogs QB room
ByDEAN STRAKAFORT WORTH, Texas — TCU's offense was a driving force in the program's run to the national championship game in Year 1 of the Sonny Dykes regime, but the personnel will look substantially different in 2023. Among the notable changes, Kendal Briles was hired away from Arkansas to become TCU's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks after reigning Broyles Award winner Garrett Riley left in January to join Dabo Swinney's Clemson staff.
With quarterback Max Duggan off to the NFL Draft after finishing 2022 as the Heisman runner-up, Briles will be also working hands-on with a first-year starting quarterback, presumably Chandler Morris. Morris, who transferred in from Oklahoma after the 2020 season and was once an Arkansas commit, beat Duggan last offseason for the starting job. However, a lower-body injury during TCU's Week 1 victory against Colorado gave way to Duggan, who never surrendered QB1 duties. Speaking Wednesday after TCU's second practice session of spring, Dykes said he is pleased with the chemistry Briles is forming with Morris and others in the TCU quarterbacks room, citing player relatability as one of Briles' top strengths.
