Apparently Woody was a tad ragey. All this before punching the guy in the throat.

“In 1959, following a 17−0 loss to USC, Hayes threw a punch at Los Angeles Examiner sportswriter Al Bine, who had asked Hayes why he lost, but missed, and punched the brother of Pasadena Independent sports editor Bob Shafer in the back instead.“

“In a May 1965 meeting of Big Ten Conference athletic directors and coaches, Hayes nearly started a fight with Iowa's athletic director, Forest Evashevski, before being restrained.”

“Prior to the 1973 Rose Bowl, Hayes shoved a camera into the face of a news photographer. As a result, Hayes was suspended for three games, fined $2,000, and left California with a subpoena.”

“In 1977, a late fumble at Michigan caused Hayes to charge at ABC cameraman Mike Freedman, who recorded his frustration while laughing at him. Hayes was ejected, put on probation by the Big Ten Conference, and fined $2,000.”

“Late in the 1971 rivalry game against Michigan in Ann Arbor, furious over what he thought was a missed defensive pass interference foul by Thom Darden of Michigan, Hayes stormed onto the field, launched a profanity-laced tirade at referee Jerry Markbreit, and tore up the sideline markers, receiving a 15-yard
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Hayes then threw the penalty flag into the crowd, a kicking tee at Markbreit, began destroying the yard markers, and threw the first-down marker into the ground like a javelin before being restrained by Buckeyes team officials; Hayes was then assessed an additional 15-yard penalty and ejected. Hayes was suspended for one game and fined $1,000.”

Just imagine how he would have behaved if his mistress had called things off and threatened to go public.

Elaboration is for the frontal cortex and medulla. Why would I respond on and elaborate to the medulla and cortex challenged. Obviously, you know the AD idiot at UU has been harassing KW. The shallow one you responded to probably does not know what some Michigan officials were responding to when they inferred that Kyle Whittingham was the antithesis to Michigan's torrid DEI last half decade. My TCU roommates are telling me that Whittingham's contract is heavily loaded with performance incentives to Win all Bowl games for the next 5 years. UU has lost every bowl game for the last half decade.

Perhaps the amygdala played a part.

There was some great anecdotal stuff in that wiki page. Also this tidbit:

"After losses or ties, Hayes conducted locker room interviews while completely naked. A journalist from his tenure noted, "He was an ugly guy so it would clear the locker room out pretty fast."

I watched that live. Couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
Watched it on tv. Uncle was at the game. That was coach Ford's first game as head coach.
I remember my dad laughing on the interception because they should have just played for the FG. It was a 2 point game.
Then Woody totally lost his crap and ran out on the field and grabbed the ref by his shirt. Boom, another flag. My dad was laughing and then Clemson was able to run out the clock.

The next day we were in a Western Sizzlin and they had a tv. Hayes had been fired that morning. TV showed it. My dad just started laughing again.

Can't get more redneck than that.

A year or two after Woody was fired, an article was published saying, among other things, that Woody didn't clean the chalk blackboard in his office before he left for the last time. The chalk board had a whole bunch of plays diagramed on it, and a whole bunch of things like quotes attributed to Hannibal on being tough and fighting through adversity, blah blah. tOSU had the chalk board covered in glass, to preserve it for the indefinite future like a cave man drawing (my analogy not the journalist's). If I truly remember a true story, I wonder what ever happened to that memorialized chalk board.

This is probably it; you can see reflections so probably glass on top. Marty Smith of ESPN noted that it was notes for his final book. Among the notes, thoughts on Pete Rose and his "pay it forward" concept.

crazy how his mind worked. not good how his mouth and temper worked. He had hit one of his players in practice and an ABC camera man the year before, so he was on warning going into the '78 season.

He had stacked up some warnings. Losing his crap at Ann Arbor a few years prior was just as insane as the Gator Bowl.
