Somebody had had enough.
That's a tough one. Has Klieman really been under fire based on one subpar season? Doesn't seem like the K-State way. I'm guessing the AD was keeping irons in the fire and caught wind that Klein was getting offers. Decided it was worth the pain of pushing Klieman out to get Klein before he moved up to a higher-profile job. Klieman's comments make it sound like it came as a surprise.

That was my first thought, too. Whynon earth would Klieman just retire? He’s not even 60.

also…star QB at Big 12 school turns into OC, has success at A&M and returns to his alma mater as head coach. I’ve seen this movie before. Hope this one ends the same way.

Will all depend on how much boosters are willing to spend. It’s gets old saying that, but that’s the reality. No coach has much of a chance of sustained success if the money isn’t there.

In the prior era, it would be a pretty risky hire.

Campbell has proven he can do more with less. Dykes has proven he can do less with more. That’s the difference.
That's kind of the narrative around here, but I think it's overblown. Campbell had Brock Purdy and Breece Hall for three seasons, went 23-15. 7-6 in their final year. How's that for getting more with less?

Sonny has had one year with a truly talented roster and won 13 games. The talent exodus that year was huge, especially for a program like TCU that can't just reload every year. Not saying SD is all that, but his results definitely don't match the reputation. He's kind of the anti-Steve Sarkisian, (whose reputation far exceeds results) in that regard. And people keep saying how talented we are, who are all these guys we have that are on NFL scouts radars?

SD's recruiting and transfer portal success hasn't been all that good, it's more that than coaching IMO. But that's more about money that anything else. He turned around SMU very quickly prior to pay-for-play.

well, at least they don't have to change the monogram towels in the coach's restroom.
keen observation, mean purple. funny too.

in my view, coach was just tired of it all. he said that in the post utah meltdown. he didn't like nil, pay2play, tampering, entitled fans, media midgets, and all that goes with today's game. he's closer to bill snyder than eli drinkwitz in adaptability. klieman just couldn't or wouldn't. so he decided to hang it up while the program and his health were still in good shape.

collin klein may be the next scott frost or the next bill snyder. we won't know until time passes. but there could not have been a more logical choice. klein was off to a head gig somewhere if not state, reportedly usf's first choice, taken today by ohio state's o'coordinator, brian hartline.

when he left for aTm his wife, shalin, posted on twitter: we are leaving k-state only for awhile, we'll return. her promise kept, i guess.

and oh, klein recruited avery johnson to k-state.

IMHO, Johnson is a large part of the problem. With any luck he will go elsewhere and curse some other program.

thanks. even a one nutted squirrel gets lucky every other autumn.

he's closer to bill snyder
That's why I thought he was a good coach. I think a lot of guys like him will pop back up at the FCS level. Which, btw, has seen their viewership/appeal increase the past couple of years. Somehow they are immune from the NIL/Portal/Greed angst. He could go G5.

I will coach Penn State for $5 million a year. We will be totally unpredictable on every play.
I asked the other day after seeing all these payout amounts:

what kinda payout can a barely average position coach get? The way these guys throw money, one would think it would at least bring $100K and a lifetime giftcard to cracker barrel.

What do you think about Avery Johnson's backup Blake Barnett? I know he got a little playing time this year. Will Klein create a real QB competition? Barnett appeared to be the more athletic one coming out HS.

Reportedly, he was offered USF and was going to take it. Sounds like someone let K St know and they reached out.
my guess - that's all it is - is that k-state's a.d. got word from klieman that he was finished after the utah game meltdown. taylor and klieman are like brothers dating back to taylor hiring him at north dakota state. some say taylor himself was hired to get klieman to manhattan. anyway, taylor reached out to klein. and the deal was essentially done at that point, only terms to be negotiated.
