I'm being slightly facetious. If the federation went back to either of those 2 it would signal all the wrong things to me. But I'd be happier with either of them than Berhalter. And I've always been Boob's biggest critic.
I’m not quite as desperate as being OK with Bradley and Arena but I hear you.
Supposedly the USSF has said that a decision will be made on Berhalter’s future this week.

I feel like, if you have to make this announcement, that the probable decision you will announce is that you are not keeping him. That said, this is the USSF we’re talking about so they could easily make a huge spectacle just to announce they are keeping him.

Luckiest national team I’ve ever seen.
More lives than a cat. They've surpassed 9 in recent years.
Certainly lucky of late. Wind up in the weak half of the draw, play like trash, keep advancing. Slovenia should’ve beat them. Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Austria all would’ve knocked them out. But then again, I thought Switzerland would have today.

Southgate needs to bench Foden; he won’t, though.

IIRC they canned the WNT coach two weeks after their loss. So there is recent precedent for the fed not sacking immediately.

USSF identified the problem and went out and got the best women’s coach out there. Can it do the same for the men’s side (best within reason, because Pep isn’t taking this gig)?

Supposedly Crocker isn't the only one making this decision. It's a 4 member board including Crocker, Gooch, Parlow-Cone, and one other guy (name escapes me). I saw that announcement a few days ago and was encouraged bc sentiment about Berhalter has supposedly soured recently.

I want to know what they did to Marsch back in December. His statement that they didn't treat him right is really intriguing to me. I'd love to know who did what and make them gone. I also don't like that there's a committee making this decision with former players on it. That incestuous cycle of retreads huring their friends has got to stop. Get elite people in top positions and let them do their jobs. If Crocker is that guy let him sink or swim on his own.

Foden has been a shell of what you'd expect from him. Is he just out of form right now or is it a Southgate problem? Seems like a bit of both to me.

Saw today where Crocker reached out to Klopp, but it appears Klopp isn't interested in moving the conversation further. Crocker hit a homerun it seems with Emma Hayes, but if he doesn't get this hire right it should maybe cost him his job too. Berhalter was a horrible first hire for him. If he doesn't get the mulligan any better then he should be demoted to women's sporting director only or canned altogether.

Given the number of good candidates out there, though, I feel like this should be a pretty good hire on the horizon.

He's been played out of position most of the tournament. He doesn't belong on the left. He's been much more effective in the middle, though when he's trying to make things happen around an obviously-injured statue like the current version of Harry Kane there's only so good you're going to look.

Ugh. Talk about uninspiring. May turn out fine, but how do you roll out Steve to your VERY unsatisfied core customer base after 6 years of underwhelming GGG pain?

Is it a money issue? Can they not afford a top coach? Does the USSF tank the search process by only hiring yes men? Do international coaches see our youth club model and say nope?

Despite what they say, I do think some of it is a money issue. They’d have to get sponsor money to pay well bc they have to ensure Emma Hayes is paid almost as well or as well as the men’s coach. That impacts things despite what they have said out loud.

To be very very cynical, the women’s team and their suit is now holding back the men’s team coach search, sadly. Now that’s my super super cynical view. A less cynical view will say it doesn’t matter and sponsor money will be just fine I guess.

I guess I'm super super cynical then. I have very little doubt this is what's happening.

I do thin Dolo will be an upgrade over Berhalter, but I don't think he's enough of an upgrade to make us outperform our potential in 2026.

Same.

And sadly, for Dolo, while I agree he will probably be an upgrade, it won’t be enough of one or make us outperform our potential PLUS, the fanbase will be very meh if not outright hostile to him probably because of the perception that it’s just another Berhalter-like hire.

England looked outclassed most of that match. A miracle it was close at the end. Pickford made some huge saves, but Spain weren't very lethal in dangerous areas. It took a terrible defensive mistake for them to find a winner.

I keep getting notifications from ESPN about this new top 100 athletes of the 2000s list they're making and Rory McIlroy came in higher than Zlatan Ibrahimovic. And they're both ranked in the 90s. Zlatan should be way higher. This list is rubbish and it's hardly gotten going.

Yup. Southgate should have started Watkins. Foden plays behind Haaland, who constantly runs toward goal and creates space. Bellingham plays behind Vini Jr and Rodrygo, both of whom constantly make forward runs that create space. At this stage of his career and likely carrying an injury from the season, Kane could not make those runs. At Bayern, Kane had Musiala and Sane running in behind from the flanks to create pockets for him. England were unbalanced but in the end Spain were clearly the best team of the tournament and deserving winners. They, unlike England, had a system that every player had and knew his role. Rodri goes out injured at halftime? No prob; Zubimendi came on and assisted the goal within minutes. PedrI gets hurt? No prob. Here’s Dani Olmo. This Spain look lIke they’ll be good for a while.
