2022 MLB Thread*

Oh my, how fun—baseball trivia, and today a first—

The Immaculate Inning—nine pitches, three strikeouts. There have been only 107 immaculate innings in MLB history with the most recent being Luis García and Phil Maton of the Houston Astros on June 15, 2022, which is also the first time it has happened twice on the same day, and in the same game, and to the same three batters—that will never happen again.

The Stros now have nine immaculate innings, to go with their 13 no-hitters.

There have been more in recent years. Garcia and Maton threw the second and third immaculate innings of 2022, joining New York Yankees lefty Nestor Cortes. There were five immaculate innings in 2021. At one point baseball went 25 years between immaculate innings (1928 to 1953).

It’d probably be a bigger deal if this was done against major leaguers…

That is a very fascinating stat. Hard to believe there have been so few, really. My question - did those games end up a WIN?

More crazy baseball trivia, Astros and Yankees—

The Yankees have only been no-hit twice since Hoyt Wilhelm accomplished this in 1958, both times by the Astros, both times a combined no-hitter. The first of these two in 2003 in old Yankee Stadium with six pitchers, Kirk Saarloos pitching 1.1 innings.

Today in new Yankee Stadium, Christian Javier versus Gerrit Cole, and Javier goes seven hitless innings, 115 pitches. Hector Neris and Ryan Pressly finish the no-hitter. Stros win 3-0. Give Dusty Baker credit for letting Javier pitch the seventh. Astros lead the series 2-1, game four tomorrow.

Astros this year—
1. Tied a major league record with five homers in one inning. Five homers has happened 8 times In MLB history.
2. First team to pitch two immaculate innings in one game; and to the same three batters! Only 107 immaculate innings in MLB history; the Astros now have nine of them.
3. First team to no-hit the Yankees in new Yankee Stadium, and the only team since 1958, twice.

The Stros continue to be a big pain in the butt of the Yankees.

Beating the Yankees is always like watching China and Russia go down…

Find the futureBig 12 Coach of the Year…

• The Astros now have 14 no-hitters in their history, tying the Braves and Guardians for seventh most. No expansion franchise that joined MLB in 1961 or later has more no-hitters. The first of those came in their second year of existence in 1963. That’s two more than any other team in that span, with the Dodgers having 12 since 1963.

• The last time the Yankees were no-hit? June 11, 2003, also by the Astros, also a combined no-no and also in the Bronx. Houston used six pitchers in that 2003 no-hitter, the most in a combined no-hitter.

• This is the third combined no-hitter in Astros history and MLB’s 18th combo effort. The club also threw a combo no-no on Aug. 3, 2019, against the Mariners, with Aaron Sanchez, Will Harris, Joe Biagini and Chris Devenski participating. The Astros are the first team with three combined no-hitters.

• Javier recorded 13 strikeouts across seven innings against the Yankees, not only establishing a career high but also posting double-digit K’s in an outing for the first time in his career.

• Martín Maldonado, the catcher for Saturday’s no-hitter, was also behind the plate for Houston’s combined no-no in 2019. He's the first backstop to catch multiple combined no-hitters. (maybe proof Maldy is good behind that plate)

• The Yankees entered Saturday with a .732 winning percentage. That’s the highest winning percentage for a team entering a game where they were no-hit at least 50 games into a season, according to STATS. In fact, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, no team had even been no-hit under those criteria with a winning percentage above .691.
