From WFAA... this is tragic. And only 2 blocks from moudy/tucker/etc
TCU student found dead at home near campus

Prayers go out to the families and friends involved, and to the students who live in the area. I hope they find whoever did this. Break-ins and assaults seem to be much more frequent this year than they were in the last 4 years when I was still a student.

Sad.

EDIT: now it's being said that they don't know if it was a break in. Sorry to report false info if it stays that way. Mods, maybe you could edit the title?

"preliminary findings suggest this is not a criminal assault nor a homicide"

Guess they aren't jumping to conclusions. Doesn't say anything about signs of a break-in, just that there had been some in the neighborhood lately.

Sorry to report falsely then... for some reason I thought the video shot said it looked like a break in.

In a statement issued late Monday night, Fort Worth police said "preliminary findings suggest this is not a criminal assault nor a homicide," but that a final determination would be made by the medical examiner's office.

Still plenty of questions. Not necessarily a break-in.

Very sad.

The only question I have with that story is, How can someone duct tape themselves to a bed?

Exactly what I was thinking......

I think the suggestion is that the individual was not necessarily duct taped against their will, not that they somehow did it themselves. Only possible explanation I can think of...

Twenty years old. ...........

During a Monday, no signs of forced entry, no signs of struggle. Wonder if someone from TCU police will have the case or someone from downtown

TCU female student found dead at Lubbock Avenue residence
Josh Davis
Issue date: 1/19/10 Section: News

PrintEmail Article Tools Page 1 of 1 Fort Worth Police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old female student whose body was found at her residence near campus at about 8 p.m. Monday on the 2800 block of Lubbock Avenue.

Sgt. Chad Mahaffey, Fort Worth Police public information officer, said preliminary findings indicate no signs of a criminal assault or homicide, but the investigation is ongoing. The name of the student is being withheld pending official identification by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

"Our homicide investigators are conducting a complete death investigation as is the case with all (unattended) deaths," Mahaffey said.

Police responded to an emergency call at 8:07 p.m. at a residence in 2800 block of Lubbock Avenue and arrived with emergency units shortly after, according to a police incident detail report about the emergency call. Emergency Medical Service staff entered the residence, but did not bring an awaiting stretcher inside.

According to incident report, the woman's roommate told police that she had found her roommate with duct tape over her mouth. However, Mahaffey wouldn't answer reporters' questions regarding those reports because he said it was an "evidentiary question."

Don Mills, vice chancellor of Student Affairs, told the Skiff late Monday night that earlier reports that the woman was found with duct tape are false.

"There was some duct tape; she was not bound with duct tape," Mills said. "Police and the medical examiner both told me that there's no criminal investigation… It's just so sad and tragic that we would lose someone from our student community. It's hard for students to comprehend, and it's hard for us, too."

TCU Police Chief Steve McGee referred questions about the investigation to Fort Worth Police.

"If foul play had been suspected, TCU Police would have issued a crime alert as soon as possible," McGee said.

Wayo Dorsey, the landlord of the residence, said he had never had any incidents with the leaseholders.

Mahaffey said the woman's family tried to contact the woman throughout the day Monday, then asked roommates to check up on her. A roommate called police reporting that the woman was unresponsive.

Junior strategic communications major David Western, who lives next door to the house where the body was found, said he was on his porch when a woman ran out of the house and frantically asked him what had happened during the weekend.

Police arrived a short time later, he said.

In my position, I become privvy to some information that the university doesnt typically like to admit, but in this situation, not telling it can be harmful to students.

First of all, the reports tonight are all over the place... Tons of different stories, especially on campus. Most likely, it was a suicide. We will know for sure after the medical examiner looks at the body.

Second, sexual assualts(reported) on TCU students last semester(fall) were double that of any of the previous 6 semesters... What did TCU do? Very, very little. They are trying to hide the fact, but it is only hurting its students in my opinion.

Third, in the drug bust that happened last semester, I have been told that a large amount of the drugs taken in the siege on campus were what are referred to as "ruffies" or the date rape drug. Again, not reported by TCU, but something that could help its students be extra careful.

Sad night. Please send your prayers to us on campus.

Fort Worth is a bit of a different environment from St. John's, but the student union here has put together the following program with university and community support. In particular, the van was donated by a local car dealer. No idea if it would translate or is already ongoing in some form:

WalkSafe/SafeDrive

</a>
WalkSafe

In the early 1990s, the MUN Students' Union established the WalkSafe service in order to provide free and safe escorts to students, faculty and staff who were travelling around campus at night. Those who wish to avail of the service phone WalkSafe at 737-3737 during advertised hours of operation, and volunteer escorts will meet them and travel with them to their destination on campus. WalkSafe is staffed entirely by student volunteers and coordinated by the Students' Union.

SafeDrive

In 2001, the MUN Students' Union expanded its services by introducing SafeDrive. While WalkSafe provided escorts for members of the university community who were travelling within the boundaries of the MUN campus, there was no safe escort service for those travelling off-campus after hours. Public transit schedules were often inconveniently designed for students taking night courses, and providing safe escorts for students going home became a concern. SafeDrive provides vehicular transportation for students who are leaving the MUN campus and travelling to a destination so as to permit the van to return to campus for the following hour.

The SafeDrive van leaves at the top of every hour between 7:00pm - 12:00am (Sunday-Thursday) from the SafeDrive departure location, which is situated in the parking lot at the base of the Clocktower steps (across from the QEII Library rear entrance). Normally there is adequate space for all comers, however in the event there are more students waiting than the van will hold, transportation is provided according to drop-off location. The van will then return and immediately transport any students who were required to wait.

Hours of Operation:
Sunday to Thursday 7pm-12am

Questions or concerns regarding SafeDrive can be directed to Alexander Troake at safedrive@munsu.ca, or by calling the MUNSU General Office.

forgive me..I dont know what your position is..but I'm not so sure about this part.

On the current events note...suicide is tragic. I hope her roommate is okay, what an awful thing to subject your roommate to.

Suicide is never an answer. If that was the case, I simply can not have any sympathy for this young lady. I'll pray for her family and friends that she did wrong instead.

Possibly not suicide but rather the choking game. Sometimes hard to distinguish between the two.

I am glad I'm not the only one who thought of this..I figured thats why there were the oddities with the duct tape stories..

None of us know what the story was, but to say you have no sympathy if it was suicide is sad. Many times, people (young and old) do not know how to express whatever is going on inside them. Outside factors can lead to depression or other things and they dont know where to turn. I had a friend who was raped in high school while she was walking from her part time job at the mall to her car. After years of struggling with her feelings of guilt and depression she took her own life. She went through counseling and had a strong supportive groups of friends and family. I would hope that you would have sympathy for her.

Think before you speak next time.
