Frogs win the Thunderbird Collegiate!

TCU men finish -34. The 818 final score is the second-lowest stroke total in school history.

Jacob Skov Oleson just misses out on his second individual trophy as a Frog, finishing a shot back at -11. Three other Frogs (Frimodt, Celli and Fernandez de Oliveira) also finish in the top 15.

The performance will give the Frogs a much-needed boost in the rankings with only the Big 12 championship tourney left before NCAA selections are made. This was the tournament to make a move, and they delivered. I'd guestimate that the Frogs will move up 20-25 spots into the top 40.

TCU...
- beat 3rd-ranked Oklahoma State, and beat them head-to-head on the last day
- beat 3 other top-20 teams, including 12th-ranked Arizona State on its home course
- beat 32nd-ranked Baylor by 40 shots
Big win for the guys for sure

Brentley Romine covers the college beat for Golf Channel and tweeted out that the Frogs' win should make them a lock for NCAA regionals. Earlier this week he wrote that one team on the wrong side of the bubble is UNLV, which has the longest current streak of NCAA appearances at 31. If the Rebels don't make the post-season (they finished in the bottom half of the field in Phoenix), TCU looks to become the new holder of the most-consecutive-appearances streak.

TCU women just finished the opening round of the Big 12 Championship at the Fazio course at the Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands. Frogs posted a solid round of +1, which places them 6th in a tightly bunched field featuring three top-20 teams.

Greta Bruner is playing #1 for the Frogs--a bit of a surprise, as she has only played in three stroke-play events this year. But she has played well recently (T22 at The Bruzzy) and is probably very familiar with the course, being from Conroe. Bruner, Sabrina Iqbal and Lois Lau all shot even-par in round 1, with Valeria Pacheco a stroke back.

TCU women with a less-great round today of +7, putting them at +8 overall (7th). Field divided sharply today. Tech, OU and UT all moved up to challenge Baylor for 2nd behind OSU, which is running away at -27. Texas had three players withdraw from ANWA after positive Covid tests last month, and they aren't at full strength, but closed strong in round 2.

TCU freshman Lois Lau ran off a front-nine 32 to keep the Frogs near even as a team and put her into the top 10 individually. But a back-nine 43 left TCU battling for 6th with K-State, KU and ISU. Still, that should be good enough to make the post-season. Greta Bruner leads the Frogs at even par (T17).

TCU women finish T6 at the Big 12 Championship. They didn't have much to shoot for in terms of team goals today except for winning their group against chasers and trying to catch K-State. They did the first and eked out a tie for the second. Not great to finish 19 shots out of 5th, but that was due to yesterday's play. Today they shot +1.

Frogs had made some progress recently in par-5 scoring but regressed again this week (last in the field at 5.08). Wonder if they are overswinging off the tee.

Individually, a great tournament from Greta Bruner, who finished T15 at -1 -- glad to see her back in form. Sabrina Iqbal had one of her birdie runs (6 in 9 holes) and shot 69--also earning a top-20 finish.

Otherwise, this crew is not playing its best golf at the end of the year, but they'll make the post-season and, with low expectations, maybe they can have a stress-free go at regionals.

As noted in another thread, the Korn Ferry Tour is in Tarrant County this week, with play underway at Texas Rangers Golf Club. For those in town, it's an opportunity to see how good the second tier of pro golf is. Daily passes are $15; shuttles run from Texas Rangers Prius lot F.

TCU alum Paul Barjon is currently ranked 15th on the points list (top 25 at season's end earn their tour card). Due to Covid, it's essentially a two-year-long season. Paul tees off at 12:15p today. Tomorrow he'll be in the first group off at 7:15a.

Other notables in the field include Tony Romo, Y.E. Yang, who famously outdueled Tiger Woods to win the 2009 PGA Championship, and former NCAA champ Braden Thornberry and his unorthodox move.

For those familiar with the course, it appears that they have reversed the nines for the event--my guess is because the 9th hole offers better viewing for spectators than the 18th, which runs along the course boundary. Paul tees off on 10 today (#1 normally) and 1 tomorrow.

Angela Stanford is T4 halfway through the LPGA's LA Open at Wilshire Country Club. Jessica Korda may be tough to catch this week, but Angela is in good shape to earn some Solheim Cup points. Here's her post-round interview: https://www.lpga.com/videos/2021/2021-hugel-angela-stanford-round-int

I think the LPGA has been wise to schedule Saturday finishes in prime time when playing in Hawaii and California. They'll be on Golf Channel this evening as well, with Angela in the next-to-last group.

The name of the game for KF tourneys is fire at all pins and make birdies. Some weeks even -20 won’t get you the win

Paul was firing at pins today. He just finished up a second-round 62. In round 1, he made an early triple and finished at even. But today he jumped over 100 places in the standings. He may drop down the leaderboard a bit when the afternoon wave posts, but he is set up well for the weekend.

Paul Barjon's 62 tied for the low round of the week, which means he is a co-holder of the tournament course record at Texas Rangers Golf Club.

Paul finished T15, which keeps him 15th in the KFT points race.

Meanwhile, Angela Stanford finished T5 at the L.A. Open, her second top-five of the season and her 100th career top-10. She is 7th in the Solheim Cup points race (top 8 automatically qualify). She is also still the last American woman to win a major.

TCU men start play in the Big 12 Championship tourney on Monday at Prairie Dunes, considered by many to be Perry Maxwell's finest work (he designed 9; son Press Maxwell added the other 9). Course is ranked 18th best in the country in one ranking; 27th in the other. Following video is worth 7 minutes for both footage and commentary.

Frogs will play the same lineup as they did in winning last week: Fernandez de Oliveira, Oleson, Celli, Frimodt, Laussot. In 2019 the NCAA began to allow a substitute for NCAA tournament play; appears the Big 12 has adopted that rule as well. For TCU, Trevor Brown is sixth man this week.

Tournament is 72 holes, with 36 holes on Monday and 18 each Tuesday and Wednesday. TCU is paired with Baylor for rounds 1 & 2. Winds of 20+ expected Monday; rain expected Wednesday.

Rankings entering the tournament:
1 Oklahoma
3 Oklahoma St.
6 Texas
22 Texas Tech
36 Baylor
48 TCU
55 Kansas
68 Kansas St.
75 West Virginia
83 Iowa St.

^^^ Nice mention of Maxwell's roots in Ardmore OK. His grave is on the first course he designed, Dornick Hills CC. It includes the signature "Cliff Hole," the par 5 #16. I parred it at my class reunion last summer. You have to lay up short of that rocky cliff, about 30-feet high, and hit a narrow green.

My team won our flight in the Mira Vista Thistle Cup Member/Guest tournament this weekend. We swept all five matches. Just thought I’d throw that out there. ;)
Good job

so when did the clubs in ft worth stop coordinating member guests?

this weekend was Bredemus at Colonial, the 200’at Ridgkea, the thistle at Mira and a one day member guest at Shady

and then today is the coaches classic

but the clubs wonder why they sometimes can’t fill the field

TCU men with a very good first round in tough conditions at the Big 12 Championships--just one shot off the lead of #6 Texas and tied with #1 OU.

Filippo Celli was one of just three players to break par among a field that includes 16 guys ranked in the top 100. He's T2 at -1. Mateo F de O is also in the top 10 at +2. Both of those guys were strong throughout, but a shout-out to Aymeric Laussot, who was +5 through 5 holes but didn't lose focus. He made 3 late birdies to shoot +5. That's the kind of round that saves a team score.

Second round underway.
