TCU women with another dual match in FW on Monday afternoon at Hawk's Creek vs. University of North Texas. University of North Texas coach says he is using it as a tuneup and semi-qualifier for the C-USA tournament next week. Frogs are also seeking to stay sharp ahead of the Big 12 tourney.

University of North Texas has 7 players, so the teams will play 7 matches. Frogs will play Nguyen, Lau, Iqbal, Park, Pacheco, Bruner and Do.

The two teams should be evenly matched. They've faced off in 5 tournaments this year; TCU has had the better score 3 times, but University of North Texas has fewer total strokes across the events.

Matches start at 1:30 for those interested in supporting the Frogs in person.

Looks like the Frogs need a back-nine rally.

When I looked at the matchups, I thought the Finley-Nguyen match would be key. Each has been the 2nd or 3rd-best scorer for their team this year, and if the matches were close, it was likely to be a decider.

Edit: Frogs get beat 5-2. Disappointing. Frogs appeared to have a deeper squad, plus recent match-play experience and local-course familiarity. Lauren Cox is the highest-ranked player on either squad, so her win was no surprise. But the rest of our regulars should not have been swept by their happy-to-qualify players.

season has been a disappointment for some we expected more from this year for sure.

Looks like the three-round qualifier is back this week for the TCU men, but only one slot available, as the top 4 finishers from the last tournament did not post qualifying scores. Gustav Frimodt earns the spot comfortably at -5 -- the only player to finish in red figures. He played well in the desert in February, so hope the course suits his eye.

Frogs will play 36 Friday, 18 Saturday at Papago GC in Phoenix.

Papago - the little muni in the rocks that got the big check from ASU and Ping when the Sun Devils realized their old on campus Pete Dye-designed "Karsten" course was an unprofitable piece of crap layout that caused cancer and knocked down shots from the power lines that criss-crossed the course a dozen times......

Too bad TCU didn't do the same with Ft Worth yet and just invest private funds in one of the muni's and turn it into their own home course.

Yes, and ASU is not the only Phoenix-area school to go that route. Grand Canyon has taken over the former Maryvale muni. More on college golf facility upgrades around the country: https://www.golfpass.com/travel-advisor/articles/college-golf-course-renovations-upgrades

I'd like to see TCU convert a struggling 18-hole facility into a quality 9-hole course plus an extended practice area/short course. I saw where Lost Creek closed a couple of years back. Good riddance. Ugly, poor design, hard to score on. Even if the property were donated, I doubt much could be done due to the housing corridors. But maybe another course, another time.

TCU men will be on the course in Phoenix a little after 10a Central for the Thunderbird Collegiate--36 holes today, 18 tomorrow. As expected, TCU is playing F de O, Oleson, Celli, Laussot and Frimodt. The Frogs have played well in the desert this year, and the 15-team field sets up well for them to make a move up in the rankings with a good performance. There are 4 top-20 squads in the 15-team field, then 4 more ranked between 26 and 32. Performing well against that second group will be key (TCU is currently 62nd). One of those teams is USF, with whom the Frogs are paired. A top-six finish would be a very good result.

The men finished strong in the first round to move from 8th to 6th in the final 5-6 holes

ahead of a number of higher ranked teams starting the 2nd round

You see how good these guys (college players generally) are when they put them on a muni. Doesn't matter that it's playing 7,319 yards and three par-3s exceed 230 yards. Guys are going to score. Right now, more than half of the 96-player field is under par.

Good to see TCU hanging with Arizona State and UNC, and getting a little separation from Baylor and USF.

Tom Hoge shoots 67-67 at Harbor Town to sit T8 going into the weekend. And he left some shots out there--missed three straight birdie putts inside 10 feet mid-round. Tom seems to be striking it really well. Wouldn't be surprised to see him break through for a win soon.

Hayden Springer will miss the cut in Vegas by a couple of shots. He flashed his talent with a pair of eagles and several birdies, but a bad five-hole stretch yesterday was too much to overcome. Hopefully he can get another KF tour start soon.

Wow--TCU moves to the top of the leaderboard, ahead of #3 Oklahoma State! Still a few holes to go in round 2. Frogs are -27, and -17 for the round. Oleson is T2 individually after running off five straight birdies. Frimodt is T4.

So, second time in two weeks I've found myself checking the TCU men's golf record book. The Frogs' second-round 264 (-20) ties the school record for lowest stroke total and is one off the school record for lowest score in relation to par.

The round today was 64/65/66/69 from Celli/Oleson/Frimodt/Laussot, with Fernandez de Oliveira shooting 70.

The other 264 (-16) was at the 2014-2015 Goodwin at Stanford's par-70 course, when Brun/Barjon/Presley/Barrett/Castagnara shot 65/65/65/69/69. The -21 round was in the 2018-2019 Tiger Invitational at Mizzou, when Mazzoli/Ravetto/Springer/Mazier shot 65/66/66/70 on a par-72, 134 slope course.

Individually, Oleson is 1 shot off the individual lead at -10 through 36 holes. Frimodt is -8 and Celli -7.

Watching the scoring, it looked like Oklahoma State was running away from the field. Starting on the easier front nine, the Cowboys were -30 halfway through round 2, and nobody was closer than 12 shots. TCU, having started on the back, was -16 at the turn. But OSU stalled and the Frogs went -9 on the pair of short par-5s to blow into first.

After such a bad March, it's great to see these talented guys turn it around.

It's going to be a tight finish in the desert. Frogs are clinging to a 2-shot lead over Oklahoma State and 3 over Tech and Arizona State with fewer than 5 holes to play. Scoring has been more difficult today but the Frogs have been steady. Jacob Skov Oleson is a stroke back--6 players are within two shots of the individual lead.

Frogs are currently -33; if they can get to -36, they will set a school record for 54-hole stroke total.

Update: Frogs now at -36 and have pushed their lead to 5. Four holes to play. Oleson has the individual lead at -13; multiple players have finished at -12.

Update 2: Frogs lead up to 6. Oleson still -13 playing the 17th. Unlike OSU, the Frogs have had all 5 cards in play. So a closing double from Laussot didn't immediately affect the score...but it does put more pressure on the others.

Update 3: Frogs are -34 with a 4-shot lead playing the last hole. Oleson bogeyed the 243-yard 17th, so he'll need a birdie on the last to win outright or a par to tie for medalist.

Frogs win the Thunderbird Collegiate!

TCU men finish -34. The 818 final score is the second-lowest stroke total in school history.

Jacob Skov Oleson just misses out on his second individual trophy as a Frog, finishing a shot back at -11. Three other Frogs (Frimodt, Celli and Fernandez de Oliveira) also finish in the top 15.

The performance will give the Frogs a much-needed boost in the rankings with only the Big 12 championship tourney left before NCAA selections are made. This was the tournament to make a move, and they delivered. I'd guestimate that the Frogs will move up 20-25 spots into the top 40.

TCU...
- beat 3rd-ranked Oklahoma State, and beat them head-to-head on the last day
- beat 3 other top-20 teams, including 12th-ranked Arizona State on its home course
- beat 32nd-ranked Baylor by 40 shots
