RIP The Great Billy Tubbs!

As a Tubbs admirer, I've always been curious about that statement that he "wore out his welcome." Exactly how did he do that?

He didn’t in the truest sense of the phrase. We had a jack wagon AD that didn’t jive with him and who tried to force him to quit for a couple years by bleeding the program out.

gimmicky system. TT, it was VERY successful. He was awesome.

One of my favorite coaches. I'll never forget the out-of-bounds play where we got A&M to foul us without us even throwing the ball in. He was a very savvy coach.

Yes, that was awesome. Right along the baseline. Just genius!

That was the flaw in his system. It was great for beating teams like Mississippi Valley State and UT Pan American 155-70, but any time we played a team who could match up athletically it was a challenge.

I don't know specifics, but it was pretty well known that Hyman (AD at the time) and he didn't see eye to eye and Billy didn't care.

Tubbs was already here when Hyman was hired. Hyman met with the coaches in the athletic department individually basically laying out how he expected each sport to be ran. When it came time to meet Billy, Hyman was telling him how he was going to run the basketball program, and what he expected out of Tubbs. If you know Tubbs at all, you pretty much know Billy's response and wording. That relationship was DOA.

I blame Hyman more than Tubbs, because he made it very personal from that point on. Billy was willing to give in on some of Hyman's request, but he wanted a happy middle ground which Hyman wasn't willing to give. Eventually Hyman wouldn't extend Billy's contract and let it run out. The rest of the conference caught wind of it, and used that to recruit negatively against us. Hyman single handedly killed the MBB program.

Without question, Billy Tubbs was a colorful, intense and highly proficient coach. RIP

Some of my favorite TCU sports memories were made in DMC watching his teams. God speed coach!

Hyman was the one who had the personality problem.

My due respects to EH for all he did in Frogland but the mega downgrade from BT to Neil Dougherty was without question his worst TCU decision.
