He’s just a sophomore, but TCU basketball already interested in this two-sport star

By Drew Davison

It’s never too early to get a head start in the recruiting world it seems. Just ask the TCU men’s basketball program.

The Horned Frogs became the first basketball program to offer Jacobe Johnson a scholarship … for 2023. Johnson is entering his sophomore year at Mustang (Oklahoma) High School, but is already projected to be one of the most sought-after athletes in his class.

Basketball and football would be physically hard to do. But, football in the fall, BB in the spring. Would be interesting to see something like that happen

It sounds great in theory but's it's just not really feasible anymore. I realize what college coaches say in recruiting but it changes once the player is on campus.

It's just too difficult with overlapping schedules and the training methods being so different.

I would love to see it though.

Julius Peppers, Tony Gonzales, Jimmy Graham, Antonio Gates, etc

believe graham didn't play football until he was done playing basketball

gates signed at mich st to play football, wanted to do both, but when he got to campus saban told him no which spurred gates to leave east lansing, play basketball at kent, and then after finding out he had no pro basketball career he worked out for nfl teams.

peppers walked on to the basketball teams for a couple of seasons before focusing purely on football and was/ is a freak athlete

gonzales is the one guy who truly played both in college and he like peppers was/is a freak of an athlete

don't think the kid is looking to play both as much as the article mentions he does both in high school. as a kid with i guess 3 years to go before college there is a very long way to go

Agreed. That's the reason it's hard. First of all, he would have to be on a football scholarship. It doesn't matter whether it's Nick Saban, Gus Malzahn, or GP, they are not going to let him miss any days of spring practice his first year especially. What happens if those dates conflict with basketball? A special athlete (like the ones mentioned) might be able to do it his last couple of years.
