Boston Herald: Celtic part-owner James Cash sees light in the long social justice tunnel

By Steve Bulpett | stephen.bulpett@bostonherald.com | Boston Herald

Jim Cash has witnessed the fight for social justice from the front lines. For decades.

When the Celtics limited partner speaks of the Civil Rights Movement, it is with a depth of knowledge and experience dating back to growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, and to his role as a trailblazer. In May 1965, James I. Cash Jr., became the first African-American to accept a basketball scholarship in what was then the Southwest Conference, signing on at TCU.

I never had to be escorted into Barnhill, but I still hate Arkansas...

Cash was always an impressive guy that had to put up with a lot of crap, so his opinions really resonate. He’s seen bad times, knows there is lots of room for improvement. But his comments about such things as Drew’s Brees show his intellect and thoughtful views on these issues. Couldn’t be a better representative for TCU.

Many years ago following either Tucker or Ferrari I suggested here that Cash would make a great TCU chancellor - to mostly crickets. At the time he was running the Harvard MBA program and was serving on many Boards of Directors so may not have been interested but very impressive guy.

As I have posted earlier, KF should start a gofund me campaign for a James Cash statue. It is the no brainer of all time. He was the first African American b-ball player in the SWC,led us to the championship and the Sweet 16 and then he became Dr. James Cash. I recently read a very long Wikipedia entry on his illustrrious career and it didn’t ever even mention that he had played basketball. LT obviously must have a statue but can we agree Cash first ?

Cash was actually the first African American player in the SWC in 1966. SMU's Jerry Levias was the first football player. TCU's Linzy Cole followed.

Gotta bring back that uni. Sweet!
That uniform belonged to me for 30 years. In 1974 Coach Johnny Swaim gave me three complete sets of TCU uniforms, both home and away, along with the shorts and stirrup socks from @ 1961 (opening season of Daniel Meyer Coliseum) through the SWC conference champs of 1968. I used them for intramural teams at TCU as well as YMCA league teams and Church league youth teams through the late 90's. In 2005, with the help of this forum and the TCU Sports Information Dept, I was able to contact most of the players who originally wore those unis and return the unis to them. James Cash got his back, had it framed, and hung it in his office at Harvard. Mickey McCarty had a group of his teammates frame his jersey as a gift shortly before he passed away. I heard it was displayed by his casket at his funeral.

That is awesome stuff Euro. I know the current coaches and they haven't given me squat.

Seriously though. That's a great story.

100% agree ...would love to see a statue of Dr. Cash outside DMC ....books in one hand, basketball in the other...Dr. Cash is the living embodiment of the “student-athlete” and his academic accomplishments should also be recognized!

If I remember correctly, James was taking Russian his freshman year while the rest of us were still working on English!

Baylor claims a football player fall 65 as first in SWC.
Have never heard that before. That is very Baylor of them.

Segregation was a hot topic in the country, yet Cash, after graduating from high school, accepted a scholarship to play basketball at TCU, instead of one of the nearly 100 other scholarship offers he had. He eventually went on to become the first African-American to participate in the Southwest Conference in 1966.
