TCU men’s basketball has seen its entire 2018 class enter the NCAA transfer portal

By Drew Davison

The TCU men’s basketball team has lost its entire 2018 recruiting class to the NCAA transfer portal.

Backup sophomore center Russell Barlow became the last player from the class to enter the portal on Monday, according to sources.

Barlow joins former classmates Kendric Davis, Angus McWilliam and Kaden Archie as early enrollees who transferred from the program. Another member of the 2018 class, JUCO center Yuat Alok, departed.

If you’ve paid attention, this isn’t surprising in the least. Hope he lands somewhere that gives him some minutes. This level of basketball was a bit too much for him.

That said, the entire class gone? Have to wonder.

This is actually a good thing for us because Barlow was never going to be a player here. This will free up a scholarship for someone who will be a contributor.
It's a good thing NOW but the time and energy that went into all these guys that aren't here anymore is pretty frustrating. So many players that apparently shouldn't have ever been at TCU to begin with. And now we've got a team with 9 or 10 brand new players.

the biggest issue is it isn't just the 2018 class that is gone and with it all the time and resources.

frogs signed basically an entire roster in the 2016, 2017, and 2018 classes and only 3 of those 13 players are on the 2019-20 team and this is not a program built around the idea of constant roster turnover in the way duke or kentucky does with their constant roster turnover

The issue is: how do we know that whoever takes Barlow’s spot will be a contributor? There has to be something seriously flawed in our evaluation process to miss that many times in a single class, and it doesn’t bode well at all moving forward...especially when it was the same issue JD had at Pitt once his assistants got picked up by other schools after all the success in the mid-late 2000s.

I imagine we can find lots of people to keep the bench warm - which is unfortunately what he has been doing most of this season.

I don't think he even played a couple of games ago when Samuel got in foul trouble - which was pretty telling.

But I do agree that I am a bit skeptical the staff is going to hit a homerun with the next guy - or even find a true contributor of minutes. We seem to be more hit than miss with recruits - HS and transfers - lately.

good question and the easiest answer is that tony benford and duane broussard have just joined the program and they have a solid recruiting track record from what i read, but i can't say for sure and not sure about ryan miller's role in the 2016, 2017, and 2018 classes

You will not hear a word from Justin Cntr etc. To do so is admitting, we have some opportunities. Don't worry though, It will be okay, we'll figure it out. However, In the meantime, we sure do need those nickels and dimes.
