DMN: Losses of key contributors adds to the complexity of TCU's linebacker situation

FORT WORTH -- As TCU football moves out of fall camp and into one-a-days, head coach Gary Patterson would prefer a greater peace of mind at the position nearest and dearest to him.

The Horned Frogs' look at linebacker for 2019 season has brought its fair share of question marks following the graduation of four regulars from the rotation -- most notably current Green Bay Packers rookie Ty Summers -- after 2018.

With sophomore Ben Wilson already sidelined indefinitely because of an injury, the hits only continued last week when Patterson announced that fifth-year senior Montrel Wilson, who TCU was hopeful would re-emerge this fall after being limited by injuries in recent seasons, left the team. Patterson said Wilson isn't expected to return.

No mention of Dylan Jordan lately. An early comment by GP how Jordan's high football IQ allowing him to catch up despite coming late into the camp got my hopes up. Hopefully, he will catch up soon (and that being behind on learning the system is all there is to it).

His highlight reel is impressive. Many plays at running back so he must have the speed GP loves for his linebackers.

Hasn’t he only been here a couple weeks? I’d imagine he’s got some work to left to do.

Hope he spends a lot of time studying the defense this week. Classes start next week, so things get a lot tougher.
Think he will redshirt. IMO if you have grade issues, you probably need a year to figure out how to balance everything at the college level anyway. Maybe he can get into 4 games later in the season if needed

Yeah, he could be a weak student, but the academic issues could have other origins, too. Sure looks like a GP type talent from the videos.

Just saw a note in a story about qb that they are seeing good things from Wyatt Harris at LB. Who knows what it means, but at least it sounds like they have an available body at LB that looks less like a slot receiver.

Every year we wring our hands about LB and every year we are good to great at LB. Then they graduate and we worry again. Repeat and rinse. Sometimes visiting this site is like being on Groundhog Day.

frogs weren't good to great at linebacker back in 2015 and 2016.

those are the only two years that a gary patterson defense gave up over 4.0 ypc as they were breaking in new linebackers.

last year the frogs struggled at linebacker while summers played de and things did improve when ty moved back, but go back and watch the second half of the kansas game. not sure i would call that good to great linebacker play in pass coverage.

Watching 2016 was really tough. We were soft at all 3 levels in the middle of the field.

2016 was another hear of a horrible offense. When you continually give the ball back to the other team's offense without scoring, the defense will suffer. The offense could not score points and the burden wore down that defense. The defense was OK, considering how much they were on the field. Injuries (deja vu here) were a factor throughout the year. It Tech had ever had as good a defense as we had in 2016, Kingsbury would probably still be there. Or maybe still coaching a pro team, but without being fired first.

The only really bad GP defense was in 2004. And that was just a bad defense. Ranked #103 in scoring defense, #16 in scoring offense. In 2016 #40 in scoring defense, # 107 in scoring offense. Way too much pressure on the defense to always hold the other team to a handful of points.

no one said the defense was really bad in 2015 or 2016. i said that the linebacker play wasn't good to great and that was one of the reason they allowed over 4.0 ypc in those two years which are the only two times in patterson's tenure and i think in fact no other year is close to those numbers by half a yard.

when the defense gave up 41 points and 468 yards of offense to south dakota state in the opener that was the fault of the offense?

arkansas loss was on hill for not falling down instead of scoring the touchdown because it was too much to expect the defense to hold that explosive arkansas offensive from rolling down the field in less than a minutes time.

the defense did get better and the offense regressed. what also killed the defense was a lack of depth.

the final game summed up that two season stretch as georgia physically manhandled the frogs defensive front in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

hence. why some of us foolishly expressed concern that the most experienced tcu linebacker right now has started 6 games at the position.
On another area, sounds like Delton and Duggan would likely see playing time this year. Folks around the program describe it as a 1a and 1b choice, not 1 and 2. Give the history of the TCU roster, both will likely be needed.

montrel wilson has decided he no longer wants to play football and has been removed from the roster.
Too bad. I really was hoping this would work out. It would have been quite a story. Talk show host to college football super star.
