Actually, if you accept Santa Anna's surrender after San Jacinto, that land becomes property of the Republic of Texas in 1836. 1848 was the Mexican treaty (Guadalupe Hidalgo) settlement with the US.

Sure, but Mexico never ratified the treaty of Velasco so the border was disputed until 1848. I was just playing it safe and going with the no-doubter.

Incidentally, they changed the story again. Now they just say that Texas was part of Mexico until 1836.
