8 shots back of USC (who started on the easier back 9). 1 and 2 players are both 5 over and scores are having to be used because the fourth player is 6 over.

Fisher's quad really hurt, since Springer's round is off the rails. But Fisher has pulled a couple of a shots back, which is key since his score will almost certainly count. If he can get another shot back and Ravetto and Mazzoli make a couple of back-nine birdies, Frogs may survive that disaster of a front nine. Maclean being even through 13 is a lifesaver.

Texas is the only team under par currently that started on the front. USC is now 9 over after hole 15

Frogs lost ground today in Austin, but they are still in good shape to advance to nationals. Starting the day they were 10 shots clear of the sixth-place team; ending the day they are 6 shots ahead of sixth.

In between, things were really shaky, as the Frogs went +12 on the front nine. For reference they lost 18 shots to Texas and 7 to their other playing partner, Pepperdine. Meanwhile, teams in the chasing group (Iowa, USC) were tearing it up, having started on the easier back nine. The Frogs fought back to go -4 on the back, posting +8 for the day and +4 for the tournament (fourth place).

Texas essentially won the tournament on the front nine today, but UT was always expected to advance on its home course, so losing touch with the Horns was no great concern.

The bigger issue is the other top-six seeds. Among those, Clemson went from 4 down to 4 up on the Frogs; TCU lost 1-4 shots to the others.

Frogs are a shot up on Arkansas, which is holding on to the last qualifying spot, five shots ahead of 2-seed USC. The only other school within striking distance is Iowa. As a top-10 team with a candidate for player of the year, USC is the most likely team to make a run. But if they do, here's hoping that the Frogs stay ahead of Arkansas, which is set to host nationals in two weeks; Blessings Golf Club owner John Tyson is offering free tickets to the public, and it will be a much calmer atmosphere for the players if the Hogs are not in the field.

With TCU's top two players shooting 77 and 80, the Frogs needed help from deeper in the lineup, and Coach Montigel's decision to start Turner Maclean paid off today. Maclean shot a 1-under 70, and that plus steady Stefano Mazzoli's 69 helped limit the damage. Mazzoli is T7 individually at -2, just two back of the tournament lead. Maclean is T15 at +1. There are 20 or more players who could win the tournament going into the last day.

-16 Texas
E Pepperdine
E Clemson
+4 TCU
+5 Arkansas
+10 USC
+12 Iowa
7 teams at +19 or worse

Stefano Mazzoli's 64 to finish as co-medalist at the NCAA Austin Regional is a career low score--he'd shot 65 four times as a Frog.

Here's the putt that got him to -9 on the next-to-last hole:

Turner Maclean and David Ravetto both finished T11 (-1). Maclean played alongside USC's Justin Suh, the second-ranked amateur in the world, and matched his 69 stroke for stroke.

Thanks to all those who posted in the other thread during play--an actual golf gameday thread!

Final regional results -- advancing teams:
-25 Texas
- 5 TCU
- 1 Clemson
+ 6 Pepperdine
+ 8 USC

Arkansas was the first team out, wiping out dramatically on the last three holes to go from +3 to +13. Bad for them, but good for all the teams hoping for a decently behaved crowd in Fayetteville for nationals.

For those interested in catching the Frogs at nationals the week of May 24, the price is right--tix and parking are free at Blessings Golf Club courtesy of Tyson Foods and the Tyson family.

Future appears bright for TCU women's golf. Incoming Horned Frog freshmen finish 1-T2 at the UIL 6A state championship:

Trinity shot 70-69 to win at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown. Jennie Park shot 71-70 to tie for second.

She lived across the street from us when we lived in Texas. Amazing golfer. I see a couple of NCAA championships for TCU in the next four years.

Don't often get to point to competitive rounds played by Kris Tschetter, a two-time All-SWC player for TCU in the 1980s who also had a long LPGA career. Kris made the cut at the US Senior Women's Open, which finishes today in Pine Needles, NC. I had a class with Kris back in the day.

Also making the cut is Jenny Lidback, who as a freshman played on TCU's national championship team in 1983 (TCU's first team natty in any sport since the 30s) before transferring.

Tchetter and Lidback each went on to win an LPGA event in the 1990s. Both are well behind the tournament leaders, but great to see them competing again.

Slightly off topic, but worth noting that Texas Wesleyan is lapping the field at the NAIA men's golf championship in Mesa, AZ. Halfway through round 3 (of 4), the Rams have opened up a 24-shot lead. Their top 3 are T2, T2, 4 in a 91-player field.

Edit: As soon as I post that, TWU goes on the double-bogey train and loses half its lead. They are up by 11 with a round to go, but it looked a lot different when they were +6 and the team in second was +30.

Edit 2: TWU posts its worst score of the tourney on Friday but still wins the NAIA natty by 9 shots. Good for them.

TCU men get underway at the NCAA finals in Arkansas in about 15 minutes. Follow progress here:

TCU is starting the same all-senior lineup that played in regionals. Interestingly, Turner Maclean is playing in the 3 slot and Hayden Springer in the 4. Frogs need both to play well and to get at least one low round out of Triston Fisher.

The Blessings Golf Club is likely to play more difficult than most courses the Frogs have played this year; patience will be key.

The top eight teams (of 30) will advance to match play after 72 holes of stroke play. The individual title will be decided during stroke play.

Go Frogs!

Little known fact...BYU got to play an official tournament round before everyone else since they can’t play on Sunday. They already played what will count as their third round.

They played under different conditions, with no competitors playing with them.

I hope they sucked.

Frogs played the a.m. wave, which included most of the teams ranked outside of the top 15. TCU was T11 for the 15-team wave at +23, with all five individual scores between +5 and +7. Not a great outing, but only five teams in the wave finished better than +20.

Tough track; will be interested to see the afternoon scores. Work to do.

With the afternoon wave complete, Frogs are T24, 13 shots off of the qualifying pace.

Frogs project as the 25th-best team of the 30 in the field, so no shame in where they stand--the field is as strong as you would expect for a national championship tournament. Still, TCU did not come in with a "just glad to be here" attitude, and they have the talent to finish in the top 15.

Individually, no Frogs are better than T69 in the 154-player field. That's 10 shots off the pace set by Cal's Collin Morikawa, who shot 5 under with four bogeys.

Still plenty of golf left.

+ 2 Oklahoma State
+ 3 Stanford
+ 4 Auburn
+ 4 Cal
+ 8 Wake
+ 8 Texas A&M
+ 9 Ohio State
+10 Texas
+12 Georgia
+14 Arizona State
+14 Clemson

Only good news is that Baylor and BYU are at the bottom of the standings.

Frogs are grinding in Fayetteville and will be playing to keep their season alive today.

Saturday was "almost" a really good day. TCU improved by 16 shots on its Day 1 score and moved up 4 spots in the standings (to T20), but I'm guessing the team left disappointed after losing 7 shots to par on the last three holes. Those 7 shots would have put the Frogs into the top 15 and within sight of match-play qualification (top 8).

After today's third round, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams. Frogs are 5 shots off of the cut line starting the day.

Individually, the Frogs have no players in the top 70.

Here's the pack of teams on the bubble for making the top 15 today:

+19 or better (11 teams)
+22 Arizona State
+24 Georgia Tech
+24 Georgia
+25 SMU
+26 UNLV
+27 Pepperdine
+28 North Carolina
+28 South Carolina
+30 TCU
+30 N. Florida
+31 Georgia Southern
+32 Liberty
+32 USC

The Frogs tee off in the afternoon wave again today. They will be on the course at 12:22.

Frogs are making a run at it, with the best score so far in the afternoon wave. Two teams in the morning wave broke par for the round. Frogs made the turn at +1 and are now even for the day (+30 for the tournament). The cut will probably fall around +37. Turner Maclean is leading the way at -2 for the day, +7 for the tourney.
