In the second edition of this column, I wrote that I would advise coaches to be very careful about leaving a good situation for UCLA. As it turns out, it has been tough for the Bruins to find their guy. The early reports were that John Calipariwas the target, although what they were offering was a pay cut to live in a state where the cost of living is significantly higher. That wasn’t going to do the trick there. The latest rumblings suggest Jamie Dixon is the new target, although he has a significant buyout that TCU doesn’t appear to be willing to negotiate. If not Dixon, Mick Cronin has also been rumored. Dixon and Cronin are very good and successful basketball coaches, but UCLA seems to swallow guys like them up and spit them out. I’d tell both of them to think long and hard about jumping into those waters.

UCLA's 1981 probation and Gilbert's indictment indicate otherwise.

I'll try to keep this one short...though I could give you the detailed explanation.

1) I addressed the 1981 probation--it had to do with his cosigning those car loans.

2) Sam Gilbert was NEVER indicted for anything. His son was...and over a deal that had nothing to do with UCLA. It was a deal to build a casino--and the problem was that he had an investor that his son brought to him who was a "dealer in illegal medicinal plant matter". The feds' target was actually the dealer--but to have the RICO charges apply, they went after everyone involved in the deal. Only Sam's son and the drug dealer were convicted...The other investors all had charges dropped. Sam was never indicted as he passed away prior to the indictments being served.

Was I supposed to type something here?
Dan Patrick this morning touched on this ongoing drama, indicating that UCLA is stalling to see if they can get the Tech coach should he become available this weekend.

I cannot imagine Tech standing by while somebody else money-whips him away. Tech has some ludicrously wealthy donors who will see to it that their man stays put.

Meanwhile, Dixon and TCU twist in the wind...

i don't see beard moving to los angeles.

what it sounds like is ucla didn't put together a realistic list of targets and everyone who is involved in this decision at ucla are not sold that dixon is their best choice.

If we lose JD we go get Beard! Selling the Fort over Lubbock should be easy....for those about ready to pounce its a joke. Happy Friday all...lets lighten up a bit.

This thread is getting weirder than the saga itself.

A couple days of the JD-UCLA saga was fine. We are over-sensitive to the anxiety as fans, but 48-72 hours of public fiasco isn’t too bad. But we’re knocking on the door of it getting beyond a reasonable time frame. IIRC, recruiting dead period through next Wednesday. Everyone will want their coach in place by then.

But CJD has to have enough pride to get this settled one way or the other this weekend, I’d think. I mean, it’s pretty clear they’re just not that into you after what they threw at Cal and now they are nitpicking over a high, but not insurmountable buyout.

IMO, Beard isn’t getting enough attention for open jobs. Would be fun to throw a huge offer at him to drive Tech’s holding price up a mill a year just for [ Finebaum ]s and giggles. He’s at $2.8... throw $6 at him (with a super low guarantee) so Tech has to pay him $5 instead of $4.

Me, trying to calculate how much more money I would require to coach in Lubbock rather than Westwood.

If I were Donati I’m asking Jamie if he wants to be here and, if so, what can the university do to make you happy. If not just get the very most you can from the buyout and move on.

As for Jamie I think he has handled this in a very poor way. He hasn’t been upfront about anything and now has a fairly large contingent of Frogs that have lost faith in him. I do hope he stays but TCU deserves better than what he’s put them through the last few days.

I have no reason to assume this isn’t exactly what’s happening

Generally agree, but we are nowhere close to a point of no return. This is day 3 of this deal. It’s not comfortable but we can all survive 72 hours of this.
