TCU football coach explains why he waited to make QB change to Max Duggan in opener

BY DREW DAVISON

TCU would’ve preferred to keep Max Duggan on the sidelines the entire game Saturday, coach Gary Patterson revealed on Monday.

Duggan had a limited number of practice reps going into the game after being diagnosed with a heart condition that sidelined him for an extended time during training camp. He only returned to practice two weeks ago.

That’s why Patterson and the offensive coaching staff didn’t play Duggan earlier in the season-opening 37-34 loss to Iowa State. Several fans questioned the decision as Duggan had a better day statistically than starter Matthew Downing.

This was always the most likely, and most reasonable explanation. It's easy for us keyboard warriors to say we would "play the best guy, regardless of circumstances," but we have no risk when we make those decisions on here. There was definitely a risk putting a guy out there who might not have been prepared. I'm happy he played great, though.

Our defense gave up 37 points to a team that only scored 14 against freakin' U. of Louisiana two weeks ago. That's where the criticism should be directed. We shouldn't be giving up that many points to Iowa State under any circumstances.

moose and i discussed on another thread that there hasn't been much talk about why some defensive linemen didn't play last weekend

cooper we have been told got hurt and the claim is brooks is still learning the defense, but what about ellison? he was the frogs most consistent defensive end the last part of the season and now he can't draw snaps?

also don't understand bowen being moved inside.

are sorrells, jenkins and barquet that far away from contributing?
