TCU men finish where they began in Hawaii, in 9th place. Not a bad finish--Frogs were projected to be 12th, and they beat 5 of the 6 Pac 12 teams. But they also finished 18-27 shots back of the other three Big 12 teams (Texas finished 2nd, OK St. 4th, Tech 7th).

Individually, Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira continued his good play, finishing T18 at -7. The other Frogs all finished between even par and +4.

The TCU women kicked off their spring slate today at the Greg Norman-designed River Course at the Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf and Beach Resort. TCU projects as the 7th-best team in the 15-team field, but they stand T13 after the first round, posting three scores of 79+ and nothing under 75. This course gave the Frogs fits two years ago--it yields a lot of birdies, but also a lot of big numbers, and the Frogs had quite a few today.

Horses for courses- sounds like the ladies need to find a different tournament next year

From a performance standpoint, probably so. But the event plays into Coach Larkin's look-at-this-schedule approach to recruiting. And with a native Puerto Rican on the team, it's unlikely to be dropped in the next two years. Valeria Pacheco is a former PR Amateur national champ, but she will need a couple of low rounds to replicate her top-20 finish from last year.

Crazy if true, but Sabrina Iqbal's scorecard today shows not one but two albatrosses. I'm guessing you can count the number of times that has ever happened in golf at any level on one hand. The odds of making a single albatross has been cited at between a million to one and 6 million to one.

Edit: This site indicates only one recorded instance of the feat (see #16).

Edit2: Turns out not to have been true. Scorecard has been corrected--Sabrina had a much less dramatic round of even par, with four birdies offsetting four bogeys. Her scores were initially entered one hole off, so her pair of twos on the par-3 7th and par-3 10th were recorded as having occurred on the par-5 8th and par-5 11th.

while i can't completely relate to going 2 over, 3 under, and 1 over on three consecutive holes i can very much relate to that 3 hole roller coaster of 1 step forward and 3 steps backward so to speak

TCU women post the third-best round of the day in Puerto Rico and move up to 11th. They clearly got the memo about avoiding big scores--only one hole higher than bogey today. But no one went low, and the Frogs don't have any individuals in the top 20.

TCU women lose the script on day 3 in Puerto Rico, posting 7 double-bogeys, 3 triples, and 1 quintuple on their way to a +18 round and a T12 finish. About the best you can say this week is that, in comparison to the men's basketball team, they only lost to Tech by 37.

TCU men posted their qualifying scores online again. Some very high scores this week; Frimodt and Fernandez de Oliveira were 14 and 11 strokes ahead of all others. Laussot, Aguilera and Christopherson also qualified for the Palm Springs-area tournament that starts Friday.

Glad to see Aguilera get a start. He came in as one of the highest-ranked players in recent years and earned a top-20 finish in his first collegiate start against a stacked field. Then he did nothing but regress. It was one thing to see him drop out of a senior-laden lineup last spring, but another to see him not earning playing time this season after the Frogs graduated six. I hope he does well this weekend to start rebuilding his confidence. Kid can play.

Meanwhile, the only upperclassman on the team, Thomas Allkins, was again a scratch from qualifying. I'm guessing he's injured, but nothing of note on Twitter. His experience and consistency will be missed--Frogs are sitting below .500 for the season and need a strong spring to keep their NCAA streak alive.

Edit: Frogs announce lineup on Twitter--one twist is that Justin Gums, who had the second-best finish for TCU in the last tournament but finished well down in qualifying, is in the starting five; Christopherson will play as an individual.

Frogs opened play at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert. (Laramie doesn't make for good golf in February.)

Frogs project as the 4th-best team out of 21, but after the first round they are in 10th at +4.

In his first start of the season, Alejandro Aguilera shoots a first-round 78, which gets dropped. No confidence booster there.

Meanwhile, Gums gets the starting nod over Christopherson despite a much higher qualifying score, and the latter (playing as an individual) responds with a shoulda-started-me, chip-on-the-shoulder 69. Frogs trail Charlotte and Oregon by 13. Still time and opportunity to come back, though.

Caden Christopherson continued to make Coach Montigel look bad for leaving him off the starting five at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. He led the 119-player field for much of the day before a final-hole bogey dropped him into a tie for 2nd at -5, one shot back of Oregon's Tom Gueant. Who would have guessed that an Arizona native would do well on a desert course?

Had Christopherson started for the Frogs, they would be -8, in solo third and 5 back of leader Auburn. As it is, TCU is +1, 14 shots back. They trail University of North Texas, rated 143rd in D1. Still, TCU had the second-best round of the day and is now T6 as a team.

Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira is playing at a consistently high level; he shot 70 today and is T9 individually at -3. He could make a run at the lead tomorrow. Gustav Frimodt also posted a strong round on Saturday with a 69.

Christopherson and Fernandez de Oliveira both finish T6 in Palm Desert--first top-10 finish for each, and well deserved.

Frogs finish T5 at +2 after a closing round of +1. But they can't be happy. Through 15 holes they were collectively -3 and sitting in 3rd place; they played the last three holes in +4. Over that stretch they lost 5 and 3 shots to playing partners Colorado State and Oregon, getting passed by one and tied by the other. Players showing no situational awareness made double and triple on the closing par-5, when three iron shots and a routine two-putt would have assured solo 4th at worst and a head-to-head win over the 5th-ranked team in the country, which was the only way to improve their ranking at this event.

Meanwhile, Christopherson finishes 11 shots ahead of the guy he was subbed out for. Frogs would have finished solo 2nd--comfortably--with him starting.

Scheduling weak-field events like this one is designed to do two things: Up the winning percentage so that you stay clear of the .500 rule for NCAA qualification; and find out if your guys can win/close when they have opportunity. TCU mostly got what was needed on the first one (15-4-1 this weekend, now 44-40-2 for the season), but they flinched on the latter.

Julien Brun dropped down this year from the European Challenge Tour to the Pro Golf Tour, which is affiliated with the PGA of Germany. Move seems to have paid off. After a T12 in his first start, he won this week's 54-hole event at Casa Green Golf in Casablanca, Morocco.

Down two going into the final nine holes of the tournament, Julien shot a back-nine 33 to win by two. He earns 5,000 euros for topping the 163-player field.

TCU women are on the course at the ICON Invitational in The Woodlands. Frogs project as 8th in the 14-team field. This would be a good tournament to play well in and get a boost up the rankings--the Frogs are barely above .500 for the season (43-41-3).

Greta Bruner gets a start this week, which makes sense--she was the individual runner-up at this event last year, which is near her hometown of Conroe.

Now that's what this team is capable of. After a typical morning round of +8 saw the TCU women sitting T6 in a 14-team field, they posted the best round of the afternoon session (-6) by four shots, moving a stroke ahead of top-ranked Texas and one off the tournament lead shared by 5th-ranked Kent State and Purdue.

On an afternoon where 68 was the best individual score posted, the Frogs went 69-70-71-72-73.

Individually, in a field featuring 11 of the top-100 players, Sabrina Iqbal is T2 at -2 (having fought back from a bogey-bogey-bogey start); Trinity King is T8 (E) and Jennie Park is T15 (+1). Greta Bruner is also in the top 30.

Edit: Thought I'd posted an event-wrap post but perhaps not or was deleted. Frogs shoot +6 on the last day and finish fifth as a team. Decent result but more was possible. Sabrina Iqbal gets a top 10 and Park and Bruner get top 20s. They get an up-close look at what a top-5 team looks like on the last day of a tournament, as Kent St. shoots -11 for the day and wins by 7. Super-consistent Iqbal, who just missed setting the TCU season scoring record last year, looks like a good bet to do so this season, if weather and course conditions cooperate. Her current scoring average is 72.3 (record is 72.9).

Second win in a week for a TCU alum on the European feeder tours! This time it's Stefano Mazzoli, who earns his first pro win (and 5,800 euros) at the Alps Tour's Red Sea Little Venice Open in Suez, Egypt.


Mazzoli slipped into a three-way tie with a bogey to close regulation play, but came through with the clutch playoff birdie to win. And it was two Horned Frogs in the top 4, as Giulio Castagnara closed with three straight birdies to nearly join the playoff.

TCU men will be in action tomorrow at the Southern Highlands Collegiate in Las Vegas. Loaded field, with 7 of the top 10 teams playing. A good measuring-stick tournament. This is one of the few college golf events that gets TV time--final-round coverage will be aired Tuesday on Golfweek. Christopherson gets the start for TCU, along with F de O, Frimodt, and Gums. GoFrogs says Aymeric Laussot is also starting, while Golfstat shows Trevor Brown in the 5 slot. Guess we'll see.

Edit: David Kocher birdies the first extra hole to win. Barjon will probably look at his 3-putt on 18 in regulation as one he'd like to have back, but still earns his first top-3 finish on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Justin Gums makes a hole-in-one at Southern Highlands on the 174-yard 12th. He shoots even for the day and is T10 individually. Otherwise, a tough day for the TCU men on a course that is set up to challenge the best collegiate golfers in the country. Thirty-two top 100 players are in the 84-man field. Frogs are T12 at +16--not great, but good enough to tie top-ranked Pepperdine.
