After being 5-4, to come back and win 14 straight and win both the regular season title as well as the Big12 tourney and leap frog all the way to 4th in the country is really an amazing performance by the tennis team. Cam Norrie is now undefeated in Big12 play and in three straight years of the Big12 tourney and was (obviously) selected as Most Outstanding Player and is 19-1 on the year and is the nation's #1 ranked player. Rybo is 18-1 on the year! The Frogs have won all but 4 doubles points on the year. Coach Roditi had the team practice indoors last night in preparation. We were actually shown live on TV! The Frogs are clearly in the elite of college tennis and now, it's on to the NCAA's!

The 64-team NCAA field will be announced on Selection Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. (CDT). If OU holds onto its 15th ranking (the ITA rankings will be announced at 11:00 a.m.), expect 5 Big12 teams in the field and all 5 should host regionals.

All the other conference tournaments are either finished or are wrapping up this afternoon. In the Pac-12, USC beat UCLA 4-3 in the finals - it is possible that USC could move up in the rankings past the Frogs because their W's were over higher ranked teams than ours (the upsets in our tourney made TCU only face the 5th and 6th placed teams). I don't think they will, but even if they do, the #4 seed is essentially the same thing as the #5 seed, so there wouldn't be any real difference. In the ACC though, Virginia gave Wake only their 2nd loss of the year 4-3, with it all coming down to a 3rd set decider between J.C. Aragone and Christian Seraphim, which Aragone won. Virginia gamed their singles slots a little by moving Altamirano from his usual #1 slot to #4 and it worked. In the Big10, Ohio State walloped Michigan 4-1 like usual. Which makes it conceivable that the Buckeyes could pass Wake (which we don't want) for #1, but Wake's lead was so huge in the computers that I don't think that will happen (we'll see on Tuesday morning). In the SEC, Mississippi State upset A&M in the semis and is currently leading Georgia 1-0 in the finals, but Georgia currently leads in 4 of the 6 singles matches and I think they're going to win although we'll see. USF won the AAC over UCF; Utah State is favored over UNLV this afternoon in the MWC.

Georgia wins (but just barely) 4-3.

If I remember correctly, 3 other teams will travel to Fort Worth?

And you expect this to begin on Friday?

Yes, in theory, if we remain 4th, the #29th, #45th and #61st ranked teams, but there will be some movement on Tuesday and they try to regionalize teams, so it's foolhardy to project who the 3 will be. Right now, Tulane is 29th and Utah State is 45th and 61st isn't released. Other possibilities could include Cornell, Kentucky, UCF, Wisconsin, Rice, Notre Dame, Louisville, Portland, Tennessee (and others).

Next Friday, not this Friday. There's a 12-day delay built in, but in 2019 when the format changes to resemble baseball, with regionals and super-regionals and only 8 teams going to the Finals, that delay will be eliminated. No-ad scoring (again).

Only 5 teams have won Big 12 men's tennis tournament championships in its 21 years of existence: (1) Baylor leads with 8 trophies; (2) Texas and Texas A&M are tied with 4 each; (4) Oklahoma has 3; and (5) TCU now has 2. Tech, Oklahoma State, as well as Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, West Virginia, Kansas, KState and Iowa State have none (of course, many of those don't have teams). In percentage terms (i.e., the # of titles compared to the # of years in the conference), TCU now leads the field with titles in 40% of its conference tenure. That lead will go away, however, if we don't do a 3peat next year.

Tech won the women's tourney for the first time ever yesterday over Oklahoma State. Look for 6 Big12 women's teams to receive NCAA bids (Tech, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas, TCU, Kansas). TCU will probably get a #2 seed - and would currently be projected to be going to Georgia Tech or maybe Michigan. In theory, we could also go to either Tech or Oklahoma State, but I don't think they send teams from common conferences to regionals.

For the men, I expect #15 OU to hold onto their regionals hosting slot due to beating Texas in the Big12 tourney. The race for #16 and the last regional host slot, I think, will be won by Mississippi State (currently 18th) over Michigan (currently 16th) and Stanford (currently 17th). But both Mississippi State and Michigan made their respective finals and beat highly ranked teams, so if there's any drama about tomorrow's seedings, that's it. I think USC will move up to #5 in the next ITA rankings (on Thursday), but won't pass us. I also think the Top 4 will stay the same, but Virginia did beat Wake, so that's not for sure.

Looks like we got scheissed hard.

#6 seed. We play #11 Oky State in round of 16, then play Ohio State in quarters, then Virginia in semis.

Our regional is tough also.

About the worst possible outcome

How does something like this happen given the results of the past few weeks and rankings to date? Maybe the Frogs had to win the tournament to get a top 8 seed.

Sometimes, the NCAA messes with the ITA rankings and that happened this year. We will host Jackson State, who is in from the SWAC because the tourney champ - Alabama State - did not meet the minimum required APR score. And Florida State as the #2 and Arkansas as the #3. We'll be projected to win but the Noles and Pigs are good teams. The overall #6 seed is an insult - they elevated USC and UCLA above us. We are with Ohio State and Virginia in the same bracket.

The regionals will be: #1 Wake, UNC Wilmington, Kentucky, Georgia State
#16 Stanford, Idaho, Michigan, Valparaiso
#9 UNC, VCU, S. Carolina, E. Tennessee State
#8 Cal, Tennessee Tech, Northwestern, Utah State
#5 UCLA, Army, Mississippi, UCSB
#12 A&M, Buffalo, Oregon, Memphis
#13 Georgia, Florida A&M, USF, Duke
#4 USC, Denver, Wisconsin, USD

#3 Ohio State, Butler, UCF, Louisville
#14 Oklahoma, Bryant, Mississippi State, SMU
#11 Oklahoma State, UMKC, Illinois, Drake
#6 TCU, Jackson State, Florida State, Arkansas
#7 Baylor, Lamar, Cornell, Rice
#10 Texas, Presbyterian, Tulane, Washington
#15 Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia tech, Minnesota
#2 Virginia, Monmouth, Columbia, Purdue

Like Jake, I think this is a bad draw overall. So we're going to have to overcome it and beat the best. The TCU women will be headed to Stanford as the #2 seed there.

F it. Let's kick all their asses and then just for fun go kick some more.

This championship will go down as the greatest ever when the Frogs beat all the teams.

We seem to be perennially disappointed so let's embrace it and let the best team in the country prove all the jackasses wrong.

With this draw, if we win it, we'll surely deserve it. Jackson State, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Virginia and then Wake, if form holds and we pull the upsets over the Buckeyes and Cavs That is a monstrous schedule. We'll just have to be hopeful for great play and some other upsets.

Here's some previews of the TCU regional: The Jackson State Tigers are 8-20 on the season, making the tourney only because Alabama State didn't qualify due to APR reasons. The Tigers stormed out to a 0-10 start, but then couldn't quite finish the rest of the season over .500 with an 8-10 record the rest of the way Their W's were over Alcorn State (twice), Mississippi Valley State, Prairie View A&M, Alabama A&M, Arkansas Pine Bluff, West Alabama and Delta State. Their losses were to Louisiana Lafayette (twice), USM, FAMU, Jacksonville State, Alabama-Huntsville, Auburn-Montgomery, Mississippi College, South Alabama, Alabama State (twice), Nicholls State, Memphis (twice), New Orleans, Mississippi, Alabama, LSU (twice) and Xavier. The Frogs will be heavily favored.

If we happen to win, it'll be the winner of #2 Florida State and #3 Arkansas. The #32 Noles finished 16-12, 6-7 in the ACC. This is their 15th straight NCAA appearance, the longest such streak in the powerful ACC, which includes 4 Sweet 16 appearances. The highlight of their season was beating #15 Florida in front of 1700 fans at Lake Nona. Their losses were to Georgia State, Mississippi State, Tech, A&M, Georgia Tech, UCF, Duke, UNC (twice), Notre Dame, Wake Forest and Virginia. Their W's were over Louisiana Lafayette, South Alabama, FGCU, FAMU, Georgia Southern, Tech, GWU, College of Charleston, Pepperdine, Florida, Clemson (twice), Miami, Louisville, Boston College, NC State and Virginia Tech. Their coach is Dwyane Hultquist , who's been there 18 years and their stars are Guy Iradakunda, Lucas Poullain and Jose Gracia. They are a very good team.

Led by 33-year veteran head coach Andy Jackson, who's tenure dates back to the SWC and to the Tut era (so we know him well albeit not recently), #45 Arkansas has been to the Sweet 16 20 times and the NCAA's 24 times. This is their 2nd consecutive regional appearance for the first time in 15 years and their first back-to-back winning season since 2001. The Hogs are 16-12, 6-6 in the SEC. Their losses were to SMU, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, OU, Georgia (twice), South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi State, Mississippi and A&M and they have W's over Tulsa, Illinois State, Lamar, UMKC, Alabama State (twice), Alabama, Tennessee, Omaha (twice), Auburn, Saint Louis, LSU (twice), Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Their stars are #10 Michael Redlicki, who won one of the prestigious fall tourneys and is a Norrie rival and #37 Jose Salazar. They've been inconsistent but have a lot of talent and Redlicki is formidable.
