A few big numbers down the stretch dropped the TCU men to a 9th-place finish at Nike. Frogs were passed by Texas and USC but held off Oregon by a shot and slipped past Duke, which paid tribute to Tom Petty by free-falling down the leaderboard.

Is Tom Hoge is the only TCU alum on top of a leaderboard this week? Of course not!

Paul Barjon is working through the first stage of the Web.com Tour's Q School and is the third-round leader at -23 at the Lantana Golf Club's qualifying site. The top 24 qualify; right now Paul is 13 shots clear after shooting 66-64-63.

Chelson Barrett also playing at Lantana; he stands T40 and will need a good final round to advance.

TCU alum Paul Barjon wins medalist at Lantana in the first stage of the Web.com Tour's Q School. He shoots 66-64-63-66 for a -29 total and a three-shot win.

That is some serious playing. Congrats, Paul!

Q School has three stages (plus a pre-qualifying stage). All players who advance to the final stage earn full status on the Web.com tour for 2018. I'm not sure if winning medalist in Stage 1 gets you a pass to the final stage or not.

Fellow Frog Chelso Barrett played four sub-par rounds (68-70-71-69); his -10 total left him two shots out of the group advancing to Stage 2 (top 24 in a 75-player field). Very stiff competition at this level.

Not TCU-related but Fort Worth related. Some Frogs may know Fort Worth pro Clark Dennis. At Nolan in the 80s he won a couple of Texas Catholic league state tournaments, then played for Arky & SMU before a pro career spent mostly on smaller tours. Not much to note beyond a T6 in the '94 U.S. Open.

So it surprised me yesterday to see his name on the leaderboard of the Senior British Open. Turns out he qualified for the European Senior Tour and has posted three top-five finishes this year, standing 9th on the Order of Merit.

Update on Fort Worth's Clark Dennis. He has won twice in the past month (Italian Senior Open and Dutch Masters) and now leads the European Senior Tour's Order of Merit with two events to go.

Clark was a really good junior player. He was overshadowed a little bit by Scott Verplank, Bob Estes and Brian Watts, but outside of them, he was one the best of that era in Texas. I played against him in a lot of tournaments growing up. He was, and still is apparently, an excellent ball striker. Good to see he's made a career out of it.

A bright start for the Frogs, who have made the turn and are -8, tied for the team lead. Turner Maclean is T1 individually at -4. All five cards are in play for TCU.

Frogs finish the first round (of 3) T8 with a -3 285. A decent round, but one that had to leave a bad taste in their mouths, because through 14 holes they were -9 and close to the lead.

Third-ranked Oklahoma State leads at -11; they were only one shot ahead of the Frogs through 14 holes but played the closing holes -1, while TCU was +6 on the counting cards.

Individually, Maclean is T6 with a 68; Triston Fisher is T12 with a 69.

By the way, Golfstat came out with its rankings this week for the current season. Men are 43rd; women 79th. TCU women will be in action tomorrow with a chance to improve on that mark.

Among the men, Oklahoma St., OU, Baylor and Tech all in the top 15.

Edit: Women play Sunday-Tuesday.

Solid round for the TCU men today (-7) with four scores of par or better. Frogs were sitting 9th or 10th most of the day, but Maclean finished birdie-birdie and Mazzoli closed with an eagle to push the Frogs into a four-way tie for 7th at 10 under. A lot to play for tomorrow as the Frogs try to break out of the bunch.

Individually
68-70 Turner Maclean (T9)
69-71 Triston Fisher (T17)
73-68 Stefano Mazzoli (T26)
75-72 David Ravetto (T59)
76-75 Pierre Mazier (T72)

Horned Frog men have a sluggish finish in Georgia, shooting +1 as a team to finish T11 at -9 overall. Individually, Triston Fisher finished T7 in a very strong field.

The women are off to a good start in San Antonio, shooting +2 as a team to sit second in a 14-team field.

In her first start of the season, sophomore transfer Greta Bruner shot a smooth 72 (even), good for T9 individually. Emmy Martin also shot even for the Frogs.

Women play Monday and Tuesday as well. Follow their progress at https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/42234/

With a 7-under 65, Emmy Martin shoots a career-low round and one of the lowest rounds I can recall by a female Horned Frog. She is tied for the tournament lead with one round to play at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio.

As a team, the Frogs take sole possession of 2nd place after a 6-under 282 (-4 total). They are way back of third-ranked Arkansas but ahead of several top-40 teams, including A&M, Houston, Oklahoma, Auburn, Denver and UTSA.

Well done, ladies! Finish strong.

GoFrogs.com notes that Emmy's 65 is one off of the TCU 18-hole record and the team score of -6 282 is also one shot off of the all-time TCU record.

TCU women showed some guts today. They were in a difficult spot: a mile back of third-ranked Arkansas and trying to hold off several good teams chasing them.

Then, they got off to a terrible start, going +6 over the first three holes (E, +2, +2, +2, +3). They had already been caught by three teams, and at one point Texas A&M, which started three back of the Frogs, was 9 shots ahead of them.

But every one of the five fought back and kept the wheels from falling off. Every TCU player finished the round at +1 or better. And when Grace Do birdied her last hole, the Frogs had come all the way back to catch the Aggies and claim a well-earned second-place team finish.

Individually, Emmy Martin was in a fight for medalist all day with three other players. A double at the par-three 15th ended her bid, but she still finished solo fourth.

Annika Clark also made the top 10, finishing T9. Freshman Grace Do was T17 and Greta Bruner finished T21 in her first start for TCU. Brooke McDougald also finished in the top half of the 74-player field at T37.

Great job, Frogs!

Interesting to see TCU Women's Golf tweet feedback on their performance from sports psychologist Brian Cain. Frogs showed mental resilience for sure.
