SB Nation: Gary Patterson dishes on TCU losing the in-state recruiting arms race

By Cody Daniel@CodyDanielSBN

Nearly two decades into his tenure at TCU, Gary Patterson has built the Horned Frogs into a nationally prominent program. An impressive feat, to be sure, but far more notable is that he and his staffs have largely done so by digging up diamonds in the rough and not only surviving but thriving on what’s oftentimes the scraps left behind from regional recruiting powers and college football’s blue bloods.

Since the recruiting services began tracking rankings at the tail end of the 20th Century, TCU has never once capped a cycle with a class ranked within the top 20 nationally. That seemingly shouldn’t be the case — far from it — given that TCU is not only rooted in the fertile recruiting region that is the DFW Metroplex, but the Horned Frogs win... a lot.

what a shock, a hit piece by a writer from a texas website talking about tcu becoming reliant on out of state recruiting when many of mensa's highest rated recruits to date are from the west coast.

additionally, it will be interesting to see if the horns recruiting in the metroplex turns now that smu hired ra'shard samples as a wide receiver coacg

"This often indescribable reality was evident last cycle as Patterson had to venture north and sign four-star quarterback and Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year, Max Duggan, as the headliner of his 2019 class."

Completely ignoring the fact that Duggan was higher rated than any QB from the state of Texas according to the 247 composite (Dual Threat or Pro Style). We did not have to venture out of state. We chose to because we wanted a better player.

SB nation is officially crap after Bill Connolly has left.

FOW needs to have a conversation with this guy because SB Nation has typically never written crap like this

I mean SBNation is just a flag blog site. Each team specific site is run by fans of that team. The only full time writers they have on staff are the national writers for the various sports.

Some team sites are great while some are terrible. It is very hit or miss.

Didn’t realize it’s from BON, which explains a bunch. Still, this type of fake news negative journalism is new for them.

It must really chap little Cody's backside that a team with sub-par, "out of state" recruits has gone 5-2 against his precious Longhorns since we joined the BigXII.

It is a fan article. It did raise an interesting question but then neglected to answer it which is: Why doesn't TCU rank as high as UT and A&M and other Big State Us in the recruiting rankings despite being very competitive? If he had considered that question, he might have come up with some things like:

1. Recruiting rankings are skewed towards Big State Us because they are a business that caters to the larger subscriber bases of Big State Us. In other words, the Big State Us will always see their recruits get higher rankings in comparison regardless of actual talent. So this means TCU's actual team recruit rankings will always be a few spots lower than they should be each year.

2. Some recruits simply want to play at larger stadiums and go to big schools. TCU as a small private school does not offer this.

3. The Big State Us have shown a willingness to shall we say provide extra incentives far more often than little ole TCU to get recruits. Naturally, this means TCU will lose out on some recruits now and again.

4. The article mentions that TCU is more willing to coach up or project players. This is less common with the move to the Big12 but still highlights a difference between how the Big State Us recruit and TCU recruits.

5. The article ignores that OU had shifted its recruiting focus to more nationally rather than targeting the State of Texas and they have managed to do quite well. This example alone calls into question the premise that recruiting in the State of Texas is the best method of success. Or to put it another way, why is OU a superior program to UT and A&M if in state recruiting is so important?

Bullseye

Come on you have to see that A&M is the new Ole Miss with recruiting. These guys are going beyond normal incentives ... it is one thing to surpass Sumlins recruiting, sure you'll get a few more 4 or 5 stars b/c of NC coach. But they have gone way above that. And not sure NCAA or their fans care. And I'm not sure UT is there yet. Sure the recruiting is better this cycle that happens when you win a NY6 bowl game, but they are not recruiting at A&M's level. The talent that has flipped from TCU to Texas in the past has been their best players which also show stars are more about subscriptions and TCU evaluations are superior over recruiting sites.

TCU doesn't recruit like big public schools they find the talent that best fits, some NFL ready, some need developing, but everyone is picked to help TCU win games.
