GoFrogs: TCU Powers Past UTRGV, Wins 18-2

FORT WORTH – An 11-run second inning helped TCU overcome an early deficit in an 18-2 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley in seven innings. The Horned Frogs blasted three home runs in notching their fifth straight victory.

The Rundown
After falling behind 2-0 on a two-out rally from UTRGV in the top of the first, the Frog bats came to life in the bottom of the second. TCU sent 15 men to the plate and 11 scored to open up an 11-2 lead.

Back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Mason Hesse and Zach Humphreys tied the game at two. Austen Wade grounded out to put the Frogs on top. A two-run double from Cam Warner gave the Frogs some breathing room.

RBIs from Evan Skoug and Nolan Brown pushed the lead to five, 7-2. Hesse put the exclamation point on the inning with a grand slam to left.

TCU tacked on another run in the third on an RBI double from Josh Watson. Humphreys and Skoug each launched two-run home runs in the fourth to make it a 16-2 ballgame. Watson capped the Frogs’ scoring barrage with a two-run double in the sixth.

On the mound, Austin Boyles (1-0) picked up his first career win in relief of Dalton Horton. He allowed just one hit and struck out six in 3 2/3 innings. Dalton Brown fanned two in a perfect sixth and Ryan Burnett struck out one in the seventh.

He was pretty ineffective. His command was not great and the UTRGV batters were squaring him up pretty good. I felt like he was fortunate to only give up a couple of runs.
He definitely wasn't effective. At the time he came out he had 2 runners on base too, IIRC. We were also down 2-0 and had a lot of swings and misses against the RGV starter so Schloss probably felt like we couldn't afford to go down even more. It was the right move.

Congrats to AB37 on his first win as a Frog. His family went to our church when he was growing up and he and my son played HS ball together. He has generally been effective in limited work this year. Nice to see him get some innings in and not allow any runs. You can never have too many guys that can come in out of the pen and give you quality innings, especially when it comes to post-season.
