GoFrogs: No. 24 TCU Women Win Fifth Straight

Box Score | Box Score | Notes

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- No. 24 TCU women's basketball had a huge third quarter, held on in the fourth, and grabbed its fifth straight win by beating Kansas State, 68-63, at Bramlage Coliseum on Wednesday night.

TCU (14-5, 5-3), playing as a ranked team for the first time since 2010, got 22 points from Amy Okonkwo, including a career-high-tying three 3-pointers. Sydney Coleman added 10 points, including two big 3-pointers in the decisive third quarter. The Frogs played without Toree Thompson who had started every game this season but was out with an injury.

Kianna Ray made big plays down the stretch as Kansas State (11-9, 3-6) got a 13-point TCU lead down to as close as two points in the final minute of the game.

The Frogs five-game winning streak is their first since 2013-14, and the five consecutive conference wins is a first since a six-game streak in the Mountain West Conference in 2010-11.

Defining Moments
TCU's third quarter was the difference as the Frogs outscored the Wildcats, 24-13, in the frame. TCU opened the quarter with the first four points and never trailed again.

The biggest momentum shift came when Coleman made a 3-pointer, just her second of the season, grabbed a steal on K-State's ensuing possession, then hit another from deep on the next possession. The back-to-back 3-pointers from Coleman put the Frogs up by eight, 44-36, less than three minutes into the quarter.

Okonkwo's third 3-pointer of the game would come on TCU's last possession of the quarter and give TCU an 11-point, 58-47, lead after three quarters.

The Frogs would go scoreless for nearly five minutes early in the fourth quarter as Kansas State begin to work its way back into the game. Ray made the first of her clutch plays when she broke the scoring draught with a 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer, giving TCU a 65-56 lead with 3:55 remaining.

TCU, however, would then scoreless for over three minutes as the Wildcats cut the lead to 65-63 with under a minute to go. The Frogs would force a missed jumper by Kayla Goth, then Ray made 1-of-2 free throws to push the lead to three, 66-63, with 11.3 seconds remaining.

Ray then stole K-State's ensuing inbounds pass and set up a layup from Okonkwo on an inbound pass from Amber Ramirez to seal the victory.

Stat of the Game
35.4 -- TCU held Kansas State to 35.4 percent (11-of-31) shooting in the second half, including 3-of-11 from deep. The Wildcats made 5-of-16 from deep in the first half.

Quote of the Game
"We can't play as well in the second half as we did if we're not conditioned. We wouldn't be in good condition if our team didn't come into practice and work as hard as they do, or if we didn't have the strength and conditioning coach and athletic trainer working as hard as they are.

"We were down a player today (Thompson), a starter. We play a pretty deep bench, and I think losing a starter at this time of the season didn't hurt us as much as it could have because we have so many players that have been in these game situations." - Raegan Pebley

Up Next
The Frogs return home to host Oklahoma at Schollmaier Arena on Saturday at 2 p.m. TCU's three Big 12 losses have come to the Sooners, West Virginia and Kansas. The Frogs have already beaten the Mountaineers and the Jayhawks in the second meeting with each.
